Henry Alberty & Nancy Douthit of NC, IN, AR & MO

Henry Alberty was the middle child, the fifth of nine born to Henry Alberty and Rebecca (MNU) on 15 July 1815 in Surry County, North Carolina.

The family moved a number of times, leaving North Carolina first for Indiana, then Washington County, Arkansas and finally settled in Newton County, Missouri.

Henry married Nancy Douthit, whose family was known to the Albertys back in North Carolina and who intermarried with them several times. The young couple married on 29 December 1836 in Union County, Indiana, where their first child was also born.

The young family then moved to Arkansas, but only remained there long enough for their second child, Margaret Valinda, to be born in 1841. By 1843, they had permanently settled in Newton County, Missouri, where Henry worked as a farmer on his own land.

Before the Civil War, the family lived comfortably, as Henry’s real estate was valued at $1200 and his personal estate at $1400. The war was hard on everyone and values dropped significantly by 1870, with his real estate worth $800 and personal estate at $420. At least, the family wasn’t bankrupted like so many others.

By 1880, Henry and Nancy were in their 60s, the children were all grown and granddaughter Eva, 13 years old, lived with them, possibly to help out on the farm.

Henry Alberty died on 9 February 1888, intestate. His son, Samuel Nathan Alberty, was appointed estate administrator on 17 February 1888. His wife, Nancy, survived him by six years, passing away on 27 September 1894 in Ritchey, Newton, Missouri.

Henry and Nancy (Douthit) Alberty have many descendants today.

George Alberty & Evaline (MNU) of Washington County, Arkansas

Today’s family story is a short one because George Alberty, the fourth son of Henry Alberty and Rebecca (MNU) was born c1813 in North Carolina and disappears from the records after the 1860 census of Vineyard Township, Washington, Arkansas.

George Alberty married Evaline (MNU), c1844 and they were the parents of two daughters:

  1. Emma Rillas, born c1846; died after 1900, possibly in Stillwater Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory; married Joseph W. Waters, 13 June 1860, Washington County, Arkansas
  2. Luella Melissa, born 10 March 1848; died 22 July 1893, Washington County, Arkansas; married James N. Longwith, c1868

In 1870, Evaline was living with Joseph and Emma Waters, still in Washington County, Arkansas. The two waters children were also in the home, but no George. Evaline moved to Oklahoma with Joseph and Emma and is enumerated there in 1900, living with them in Stillwater.

George and Evaline have descendants today, but I would love to know more about their story. When, where and how did George die? Did he die from Civil War-related causes? What happened to Evaline and what was her maiden name?

This is the child of Henry’s and Rebecca’s about which I know the least. Please share if you have information about this family.

Daniel Alberty & Valinda Douthit, NC & AR

There is much less known about Daniel Alberty, son of John Henry and Rebecca (MNU) Alberty.

Daniel Alberty was born c1811 in North Carolina, likely the third son and third child both to Henry and Rebecca.

Daniel married Valinda Douthit on 17 March 1834 in Davidson County, North Carolina.

Daniel and Valinda made the trip to Arkansas with other family members and were enumerated in Washington County, Arkansas in 1840. At that time, there was one female aged 30-39, two males aged 20-29, one female aged 20-29, one male under 5 and two females under 5.

Valinda died sometime before the 1850 census, as Daniel is found as head of household with two children, Nancy, born 1837, Indiana and George, born 1840, Arkansas. If the second female was a child of Daniel’s, she appears to have died before 1850.

Also at home in 1850 are Henry and Rebecca Alberty and Daniel’s unmarried sister, Mary.

Daniel never remarried. On 1 November 1854, he purchased 55 81/100 acres of land in T 13N R 33W S2 plus another 40 acres in 1861 in the same township, range and section.

By 1860, Henry Alberty had died. Daniel is again head of household with Nancy, 21, Andrew, 19, his mother Rebecca, 77, and his sister, Mary, 33.

Daniel Alberty died between 1880, when he lived with son George’s family in Washington County, and 1900, when he is no longer found in the census.

Children of Daniel Alberty and Valinda Douthit:

  1. Nancy M. born 3 November1837/38, Indiana; died 28 February 1911, Pauls Valley, Garvin, Oklahoma; married John C. Powell, 27 January 1868, Washington County, Arkansas. This family was in Oklahoma very early, as Rev. John C. Powell died in Pauls Valley on 16 February 1891.
  2. George Andrew, born 1840, Washington County, Arkansas; died between 1880-1900, probably Washington County, Arkansas, but possibly in Hill County, Texas where Charlotte lived with her daughters family in 1900; married Charlotte Catherine McCaleb, 7 August 1868, Washington County, Arkansas

Daniel and Valinda (Douthit) Alberty have descendants today.
