James Gardner & Elizabeth Vinson, Gloucester, MA, 1600s

Today’s family sketch is of James Gardner and Elizabeth vinson of Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts.

James Gardner was born c1639, possibly in England since he doesn’t appear to be related to the earlier Gardner/Gardiner families in colonial Massachusetts.

He married Elizabeth Vinson, daughter of William Vinson and Sarah (MNU) of Gloucester.

Elizabeth was born on 16 May 1644 in Gloucester and married James Gardner there on 19 June 1661.

James and Elizabeth were the parents of ten children, although several died in childhood.

Children (All events in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts):

  1. Sarah, born about April 1662, died 16 April 1662
  2. James, born 5 October 1663; died 5 October 1663
  3. George, born 22 March 1664; died 22 March 1664
  4. Elizabeth, born 11 June 1666; died after 1689 when she was a legatee in her uncle Jeffrey Parsons’ 1689 will
  5. Sarah, born 17 January 1668/69; married Robert Elwell, 12 October 1687
  6. Mary, born 13 September 1671; died 25 October 1671
  7. Joseph, born 23 October 1672; married Hannah Elwell, 2 January 1694/95
  8. Rebecca, born 15 September 1675; married Samuel Witham, 5 December 1705
  9. John, born 11 June 1678; died after 1689 when he was a legatee in her uncle Jeffrey Parsons’ 1689 will
  10. James, born 27 August 1681; married Abigail (MNU), about 23 January 1706/07

Not only must it have been heartbreaking for James and Elizabeth to lose their first three children as young infants and then another daughter in 1671, but the children faced even greater heartbreak.

James Gardner must have realized that something was going to happen for her wrote his will in 1683, when he was probably only in his 40s. His wife, Elizabeth, died on 4 March 1684 and per his will/estate records (originals not found, only abstract notes), James remarried to an unknown person, possibly Mary (MNU) later that year.

However, James, too, passed away on 8 December 1684, leaving his orphaned children, who were all minors.

James named his eldest son, Joseph, as executor, but as he was not of legal age, the court appointed Jeffrey Parsons, their uncle through his marriage to Sarah Vinson, sister of Elizabeth (Vinson) Gardner, as executor until Joseph came of age.

As with the Witham clan, there are a lack of death records for this family, at least for those who lived to adulthood. However, Robert Elwell removed to Maine and it is possible that other members of this family followed.

Thomas Gardner of Cape Ann, MA 1624

Thomas Gardner could be considered a founding father of Massachusetts. Little is known of his origins, except that he was born c1592 and could well have been born in Dorset, England.

He had the responsibility for overseeing the Dorchester Company Cape Ann settlement in its founding year of 1624. Not even big enough to be called a village, Cape Ann was inhabited for just one year; its purpose was to serve as a fishing and salt works site, with the catch being shipped back to England. However, the project was abandoned after just one year with some of the men returning to England and others, like Thomas Gardner, choosing to remain in what eventually became the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

As the land wasn’t good for farming, Thomas Gardner soon moved to what would become Salem, Massachusetts, where he spent the rest of his life.

In the following years, Thomas Gardner must have been held in high esteem by contemporaries, as he is frequently mentioned in town minutes completing various services for Salem and its residents, collecting corn, taking estate inventories and proving wills.

Not much is known about Thomas Gardner’s wife/wives either. The Great Migration Study sketch about Thomas suggests that he married an unknown wife by 1614 and died giving birth to her last child, Seeth, who was baptized on 25 December 1636 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. Given that there is an eight-year gap between the estimated birth years of George and John, I wonder if he might even have had a fourth wife. Of course, it is very possible that two or three children died young in that time span.

For now, the hypothesis is that Thomas Gardner married (1) Unknown, by 1614, and she died in 1636 giving birth (2) Margaret, by 1639. This Margaret is said to have been a Friar, but there is no documented proof of her maiden name. (3) Damaris (MNU) Shattuck, who died a month before Thomas, on 28 November 1674, Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. Thomas died on 29 December 1674, also in Salem.

  3. John, born c1624, either England or Cape Ann, Massachusetts; died 6 May 1706, Nantucket, Massachusetts; married Priscilla Grafton, by 1654, probably in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts.
  4. Sarah, born c1627, probably Salem, Essex, Massachusetts; married Benjamin Balch, c1650
  5. Samuel, born c1629, probably Salem, Essex, Massachusetts; married (1) Mary White, before 1658 (2) Elizabeth (MNU) Paine, 2 August 1680, Salem, Essex, Massachusetts
  6. Joseph, born c1630; married Ann Downing

John Gardner & Priscilla Grafton, Salem, MA 1600s

As I continue my trek through the early New England branches of my family tree, I find myself reviewing my short Gardner line, given that the immigrant’s granddaughter, Ruth, my line, married a Coffin and ended the Gardner surname for me.

What is most fascinating to me about John Gardner and his wife, Priscilla Grafton, is that they lived in Salem (albeit long before the witchcraft trials) for years and likely knew many of the families associated with the accusations and trials. I would really love to know what they thought about it all, but I digress.

John Gardner was born c1624, either in England or Cape Ann, Massachusetts. He was the son of Thomas Gardner, documented in Cape Ann by 1624, and an unknown mother. More about that later on.

John Gardner married Priscilla Grafton by 1654. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Grafton, born c1626 and died in Nantucket in (no month or day recorded) 1717.

However, their first child’s birth (John) is recorded in Salem as 20th day 12th month 165(3) (in this format), followed by siblings born in 1655, 1656, 1658, and so on.


Salem Vital Records

Yes, the child could have been one of those super early babies, but there is no mention of fornication charges made against the couple. Therefore, it seems most probable that John and Priscilla married in 1652 or early in 1653 and spent most of the early years of their marriage living in Salem.

Children: (All born in Salem except Mehitable and Ruth, born in Nantucket)

1. John, born 20d 12m 165(3); married Susannah Green, by 1681, likely in Boston or Salem, Massachusetts; no further record.
2. Joseph, born 8d 5m 1655; no further record. He is NOT the Joseph Gardner who married Bethiah Macy in 1670! That Joseph was the son of Richard and Sarah Gardner.
3. Priscilla, born 6 September 1656; married John Arthur, 20 February 1676, Nantucket, Massachusetts; no further record. However, there is a Priscilla Arthur who married Thomas Bunker. Thomas Bunker was born in 1680 and died 14d 3m 1721 in Nantucket. His death record says he was the husband of Priscilla Arthur. Priscilla Bunker died 14d 1m 1721, also in Nantucket. I find no birth records for children of John and Priscilla Arthur. If Priscilla Gardner Arthur married Thomas Bunker, he was significantly younger (24 years) than his wife. No death record has been found for Priscilla Arthur.
4. Benjamin, born 3 December 1658; died 23d 6m 1662, Salem, Essex, Massachusetts
5. Rachel, born 3 August 1661; married (1) John Brown, 8m. 1686, Nantucket, Massachusetts (2) James Gardner, between 1701-1704, probably Nantucket, Massachusetts as his second wife.
6. Benjamin, born 17 May 1664; no further record
7. Ann, born 30 December 1667; died 1d. 4m. 1745, Nantucket, Massachusetts; married Edward Coffin by 1701. They had no children.
8. Nathaniel, born 24 July 1668; no further record. Nathaniel who died in 1713 was the son of Richard and Sarah Gardner.
9. Mary, born 27 May 1670; died 28d 10m 1767, Nantucket, Massachusetts; married Jethro Coffin, by 1686, Nantucket, Massachusetts
10. Mehitable, born 24 November 1674; married Ambrose Dawes, 14 August 1704, Salem, Massachusetts; no further record
11. Ruth, born 26 January 1676; died 4 October 1748, Nantucket, Massachusetts; married James Coffin, 19 March 1692, Nantucket

Captain John Gardner sailed the seas, first out of Salem and then from c1673 onwards from Nantucket, where he lived for the rest of his life.

Being a highly regarded community member, John Gardner served as chief magistrate of the Nantucket Court from 1680 to 1682 and again in 1684.

He died on 6 May (or 6 July) 1706 [6th day 5th month] in Nantucket, Massachusetts. His wife, Priscilla, survived him by 11 years. Her death is recorded in Nantucket in 1717, but the month and day are omitted from the record.
