My Favorite Genealogy Blogs

A week or so ago, I published a list of the man genealogy blogs I follow on my Substack. I have no plans to end Empty Branches on the Family Tree and have only tiptoed into Substack with occasional posts.

However, I was very surprised by the response to my list of blogs, some hosted on WordPress or Blogger, but also quite a few on Substack. I hope it has brought attention to the many excellent bloggers on any platform.

I decided to share the list here, too, for the same reason – to highlight the many bloggers who regularly post family stories, genealogy news and resources/methodology tips.

I’ve been asked how I keep up with all of them – I use feedly, an RSS aggregator, which is like an electronic file cabinet. Feedly collects every new post on the blogs I follow and lists them in a group for me, which makes it very easy to read all the news.

Here is my list, which actually has a few more blogs from Substack, which I found after that post. Yes, the list is extremely long, but 99% of these bloggers have posted recently.

I hope everyone will find some new blogs they like and will choose to follow. Enjoy!

The Importance of Social History in Our Ancestors’ Lives

One of my first two genealogy buddies from way back in 1979, Nancy Maxwell, went on to become the genealogy librarian at Grapevine Public Library in Grapevine, Texas.

Nancy does a fabulous job writing articles for the Grapevine Public Library Local History and Genealogy Blog.

She recently asked if I would do a guest post – of course, I would – and we settled on the topic of the importance of social history to enable us to really get to know an ancestor and better understand what his/her life was like.

It went live today, so please take a moment to visit the library blog, read my article Getting to Know You: Connecting with Your Ancestors Through Social History and then browse through some of the excellent articles she has written.

Lastly, be sure to bookmark the Grapevine Public Library Local History and Genealogy Blog so you don’t miss future articles.

Thank you, Nancy!

Blogs from the Genealogy Big Guys

There are some major companies that provide genealogy resources and services, but I don’t usually think of them as bloggers.

How many of these blogs do you read regularly?

U.S. National Archives Blogs

This is a limited list that doesn’t even touch on state archives and libraries and religious/ethnic organizations.

Blogs provide news about new collections and other resources, sales and ancestral stories that touch all of us.

If you haven’t followed blogs in the past, feedly is an excellent aggregator that will keep track of your interests and let you know when a blog has a new post.

Take some time to check these out.
