Next in the Woodruff story is the family sketch of John Woodruff the Younger, born c1650 and his wife, Hannah Newton. The Newton ancestral line has already been covered in this series, so all that will be said here is that Hannah was born c1654, the daughter of Thomas Newton and Joan Smith.
John the Younger and Hannah married, likely in Southampton, Long Island, New York, where both seem to have been born, c1670 or perhaps a couple of years later.
Their family is better documented than many others of the time and place because Southampton took a census of all its inhabitants in 1686. The list survives today and, although ages are not provided, the names of all males and females of any age have been compiled.
Added to the census record, John the Younger left a will which confirms the names of his wife and children.
The Woodruffs were well-to-do, but by John the Younger’s time, he was somewhat land poor with taxes going up and ten mouths to feed.

Birth order and years of birth are unknown and estimated as John named his sons in one group and daughters in a second group of heirs. Only daughter Sarah was married (to Mr. Davis) and most of his children were not yet 21 years old when his will was written on 14 January 1700/01.
All children were likely born in Southampton, Long Island, New York.
Children:
- John, born c1672; died before 1686 as he is not in the census
- Samuel, born c1674; died between before May 1717, Southampton, New York, when his estate inventory was published; married Hester (?Davis). Samuel left an estate valued at £177.13.00.

3. Joseph, born c1676; died 2 February 1742, Westfield, Union, New Jersey in the 65th year of his age; married Hannah (perhaps Ward). Joseph settled in Westfield, Union, New Jersey. Hannah died on 14 August 1742 in the 58th year of her age. Both gravestones are still in the Westfield Presbyterian Church cemetery.
4. Benjamin, born c1678; before 20 December 1750, date when his will was proved, Bridgehampton, Suffolk, New York; married Margaret Davis, 12 September 1704, East Hampton, Suffolk, New York
5. Sarah, born c1680; married John Davis, c1700, before her father wrote his will in 1701, John Davis of East Hampton is identified as brother-in-law to Sarah’s brother, Samuel, in Samuel’s own 1715 will.
6. Nathaniel, born c1682; died before 21 December 1725, the date his will was proved; married Abigail Leeke, 24 October 1705, East Hampton, Suffolk, New York
7. Isaac, born c1684; died after his father’s 1701 will; no further record
8. Jonathan, born c1686; died after his father’s 1701 will; no further record
9. Hannah, born c1690; died after her father’s 1701 will
10. Abigail, born c1692; died after her father’s 1701 will
11. Elizabeth, born c1694; died after her father’s 1701 will
What became of Isaac and Jonathan or their sisters, Hannah, Abigail and Elizabeth, is unknown. Marriage records are sparse and it’s possible that they left Southampton for New Jersey or other parts. Their names are all very common in the Woodruff lines.
