Today’s family sketch is the last covering the Service family and today’s couple points to a Scots-Irish origin.

This family is found in FamilySearch family tree, some children with documentation and others not so much. Therefore, the undocumented possibilities will be discussed in paragraph form and not included in the list of their children.

First, Thomas and Janet Service are found in the 1841 census of Scotland, as empty nesters, but both reporting birth in Ireland. Their ages seem a bit too young to account for documented children, so I’ve revised the estimates for their birth years.

Thomas Service was born c1780, Ireland, and possibly in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Janet Hunter was born c1785, also in Ireland, but there are no documented parents for either.

Janet’s maiden name comes from the birth/baptismal church entries for their children.

Death dates are unknown for this couple, but they likely both died between 1841 and 1851, possibly in Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland where they lived in 1841.

Children:

1. Agnes, born c1812, per death certificate; died 23 May 1862, Tradestone, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland; married James Kinloch, July 1828, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland. Her death certificate names her parents and gives typhus as cause of death.
2. Robert, born 4 December 1820, New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland; died June 1901, New Hartford, Oneida, New York; married Mary L. Nicolson, 18 March 1845, Bathurst Township, Lanark, Ontario, Canada
3. James, born 24 June 1823, Duntocher, Dunbarton, Scotland; died 9 May 1901, Rome, Oneida, New York; married Mary Ann Smith, c1843, probably Duntocher, Dunbarton, Scotland
4. Margaret, born 18 November 1825, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland; died 13 October 1886, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland; married William McKay, 20 October 1849, Old Kilpatrick Dunbarton, Scotland
5. David, baptized 2 June 1828, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland; not at home in 1841
6. Helen, born 22 October 1830, Old Kilpatrick, dunbarton, Scotland; not at home in 1841

Now, we need to look at the undocumented/unsourced children.

Thomas Service was born c1807 in Ireland, purportedly a child of Thomas and Janet Service. This Thomas Service married Janet Duncan in October 1827, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland. If so, his father’s reported birth year of 1790 is likely too late. It’s not impossible, but in that time period, it is unlikely that a teenaged boy, 17 years old, would have had his first child born. If Thomas and Janet are his parents, then they are most likely several years older than their reported ages in the 1841 census.

There is a son, Hugh, born c1813 added to this FamilySearch tree with absolutely no sources. Did he exist or is he myth? No idea.

John, born c1816, is also said to be a child of Thomas and Janet. He married Ann Millian, 12 August 1837, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland.

Janet, born c1819, is another child in the FS tree with zero documentation.

William was born c1818; married Jean McIndoe, 7 May 1843, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland. This family lived in Greenock, outside of Glasgow, Scotland.

From the sparse data, it seems likely that John and William might be children of Thomas Service and Janet Hunter, given that they married in the same parish where Thomas and Janet were living.

If Thomas and Janet were a few years older than their reported aged in 1841, then Thomas who married Janet Duncan in 1827 might well be their first born child.

Perhaps answers will be found in Scottish records.

James Service was born on 28 June 1823, Duntocher, Dunbarton, Scotland, one of several children born to Thomas Service and Janet Hunter, both of whom reported being born in Ireland in the 1841 Scottish census. The family may have come from County Antrim, in Northern Ireland and appear to be of Scots-Irish origins.

Mary Ann Smith was born c1824, also in Duntocher, Dunbarton, Scotland, per the 1841 census, but the names of her parents haven’t been determine.

The family left Scotland between 1865, when the baptism of their youngest child was recorded, and the 1875 New York state census. They haven’t been found in the 1870 U.S census or the 1871 Scottish census. They may have left in that time period, causing them to miss both enumerations.

Like many of his neighbors, James worked in the mills in 1880, as did his three oldest children still at home.

James and Mary Ann had at least eight children, all born in Scotland.

4. Agnes, born 3 July 1853, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland; died between 1901-1904, probably Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey; married John Smith, 14 November 1879, Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey
5. Robert, born c1856, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland; died between 1880-1900, probably Oneida County, New York
6. William, born March 1858, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland; died 19 May 1934, Utica, Oneida, New York; married Ida M. (MNU), c1886, New York
7. Janet, born c1861, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland; died between 1880-1900
8. Samuel Hunter, born 28 March 1865, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland; died before 1875; not found in any U.S. record and may have died young in Scotland

Mary Ann (Smith) Service passed away on 5 May 1891 in Rome, Oneida, New York per her husband’s obituary.

James Service survived his wife by ten years, almost to the day, dying on 9 May 1901, also in Rome, Oneida, New York.
