James Griggs & Ruth Gover, Pittsylvania County, VA: Son William’s Family – Grandchildren, 1800s+

James Griggs and Ruth Gover aren’t direct ancestors of my husband. In fact, they are a collateral line of a collateral line and, normally, I wouldn’t be venturing this far down a rabbit hole.

However, because it seems no one has pieced together this family and shared it online AND because Ruth’s father, John Gover, is a proven Patriot of the American Revolution, James’ and Ruth’s descendants are eligible to join lineage societies, e.g. NSDAR, NSSAR, GSAR and N.S.C.A.R.

Therefore, I am sharing further information about their descendants.

James and Ruth were the parents of William D., Elizabeth, Nancy, Ichabod, Samuel, Rebecca and Mary. Ichabod didn’t marry and his siblings were his heirs and Mary married at age 29 to a much older man and appears to have died by 1857, when Ichabod’s estate was administered and definitely before 1860 when her husband was at home with only his youngest daughter by his first marriage.

That leaves, in birth order, William D., Elizabeth, Nancy, Samuel and Rebecca with descendants.

Let’s get started with William Griggs, sometimes called William D. Griggs. William died in October 1849, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, so an exact birth year is lacking for him. His parents married in 1795 and the oldest male at home in 1820 was born 1795-1804.

William married Martha Dailey on 22 September 1822, Rockingham County, North Carolina. Estimating his birth year as c1800 is reasonable, even though he might have been a few years older.

Martha was likely born c1801, if 21 when she married, and is last found named in records in December 1838 when she and William sold land in Pittsylvania County.

Ichabod Griggs’ estate papers name William’s surviving children:

  1. Elizabeth C., born c1823; died between 1880-1900, probably Pittsylvania County, Virginia; married Henry Woodson Eanes, 22 January 1845, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. They were the parents of one daughter, Harriet Elizabeth Eanes, born 19 September 1861, Pittsylvania County, Virginia; died 20 December 1847, Roanoke, Virginia; married Arthur W. Eanes, c1882.
  2. William C., born c1830; died 12 November 1867, Pittsylvania County, Virginia; married Frances Stephens, 23 August 1854, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. They were the parents of one daughter, Susan Ann, born 18 October 1859; died 29 May 1918, Danville, Pittsylvania, Virginia. She married Samuel Davis, 11 May 1876, Henry County, Virginia.
  3. Ruth Matilda, born September 1832; died after 1900, probably Henry County, Virginia; married Jones Allen, 25 October 1847, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. They were the parents of nine children – Virginia, Martha, Elizabeth, Matilda, William Henry, James Coleman, Perkins Parrish and Laura (Lula).
  4. James, born c1834; died after 1857. What became of him is unknown and it appears he has been conflated with other James Griggs in Virginia. He may have died in the Civil War.
  5. Eleanor Ann (Nancy), born May 1835; died after 1910, probably Pittsylvania County, Virginia; married John Peyton Wallace, 22 May 1865, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. They were the parents of eight children – George (died young), Martha Elizabeth, William W., Sallie Ann, Simon Peyton, John James, Nathaniel Valentine and Reuben R. Wallace.

Next, we will look at the descendants of James’s and Ruth’s daughter, Elizabeth, who married Daniel Ragan.

Edward Gover & Elizabeth Dowdney, Tiverton, Devon, England, 1700s

This is the last in my series down the Griggs-Gover rabbit hole, having established the parents of Nancy (Griggs) Mahon, her grandparents and, now, her great grandparents who I don’t believe ever left England.

Edward Gover was likely born c1795, possibly in Devonshire, England to parents unknown. He married Elizabeth Dowdney on 15 April 1718 in Tiverton, Devon, England.

Their death dates are unknown, but they had several children. I believe, at this time, that this couple moved between Tiverton and Bickleigh, as Bickleigh is only 3.7 miles away.

Children:

  1. George, baptized 21 January 1721, Bickleigh, Devon, England
  2. Elizabeth, baptized 27 September 1725, Tiverton, Devon, England
  3. Annis, baptized 14 April 1728, Bickleigh, Devon, England
  4. John, baptized 2 May 1732, Tiverton, Devon, England; died before January 1791, when his estate administration began, Pittsylvania County, Virginia; married Elizabeth Duvall, c1757, Prince George’s County, Maryland
  5. William, baptized 26 July 1735, Tiverton, Devon, England
  6. Mary, baptized 14 February 1738, Bickleigh, Devon, England

Little else is known for certain about this family, including whether any of John’s siblings left England for the colonies. There are numerous other Gover/Govier records which might pertain to this family, but not enough information is contained in marriage or burial records to be certain.

John Gover & Elizabeth Duvall, MD & VA, 1700s

Unlike the Griggs origin quagmire which was recently covered, John Gover is a man with a documented past and descendants can join hereditary societies like NSDAR, NSSAR, GSAR and N.S.C.A.R. under his patriotic service.

John Gover was baptized on 2 May 1732 in Tiverton, Devon, England, the son of Edward Gover. A List of Emigrants form England to America, 1718-1759 by Marion Kaminkow includes this entry:

John married Elizabeth Duvall, c1757, in Maryland. She was born 15 May 1738, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Mullikin) Duvall, also of Prince George’s County, Maryland.

John and Elizabeth were the parents of nine children, who were probably all born in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Children:

  1. Mary, born 6 August 1758; died after 1797, which was the birth year of her youngest known child; married Edward Legg, c1775, Maryland.
  2. Margaret, born c1763; died between 1812-1826; married Leonard Garrett, 23 September 1784, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Leonard and Margaret sold land in Greenville County, South Carolina on 31 January 1812. Leonard Garrett died before 1 February 1826 in St. Francois County, Missouri and Margaret predeceased him.
  3. Elizabeth, born c1765; died after 1830, when it appears she was living with son Samuel “Prestige” in Lawrence County, Mississippi; married Joshua Prestage, 21 September 1786, Pittsylvania County, Virginia
  4. Nancy, born c1766; died 1840-1850, Greenville County, South Carolina; married Jacob Cooley, 5 April 1787, Pittsylvania County, Virginia
  5. John, born c1768; died after 5 November 1816 when he, Polly (of Pittsylvania County, VA)and Samuel (of Pulaski County, KY) sold land in Pittsylvania County, Virginia; married Mary Dyer, 27 December 1791, Halifax County, Virginia.
  6. Samuel, born c1770; died 17 May 1860, Talladega County, Alabama married Tabitha Best, 6 June 1795, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Tabitha died 17 July 1846 in her 80th year, as found on her gravestone, still intact and legible, but lying on the ground. However, the 1840 census places births of both Samuel and Tabitha between 1770-1780. Further, the 1850 census of Talladega County enumerates Samuel as being born in 1770. It seems that many have conflated Samuel Gover of Loudon County, Virginia and NSDAR has closed this line, stating he was too young to have served in the Revolutionary War.
  7. William, born c1772; died after 1823, when he last appears on the Pittsylvania County personal property tax lists; married Sarah Gover, 27 October 1794, Henry County, Virginia
  8. Ruth, born c1774; died 1819-1822, Pittsylvania County, Virginia; married James Griggs, 21 February 1795, Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

John Gover likely died near the end of 1790 as letters of administration were granted by the Pittsylvania County court in January 1791. Elizabeth (Duvall) Gover was living at the time of the 1796 personal property tax collection when she was listed as “Gover, Eliz. + Griggs.

John Gover signed the Oath of Allegiance in Prince George’s County, Maryland in 1778 and has descendants who have joined NSDAR under his service.
