George Knower, England to Massachusetts in 1631

This is part of a series about my New England colonial ancestors who arrived by during the Great Migration. If you have early Massachusetts ancestry, be sure to check out AmericanAncestors, as the Great Migration Study Project can be viewed there with a membership to the New England Historic Genealogical Society.

George Knower was born c1611, undoubtedly in England, but his origins are unknown. However, his brother, Thomas Knower, also emigrated to Massachusetts about the same time. Perhaps this clue will help determine his English home at some point in time.

George was married to Elizabeth (MNU), who was living as of 4 December 1674, the day George wrote his will. They are my 10X great grandparents.

In spite of the notation that George wrote a will, I have not been able to find an image of it, or even a full transcription, online.

He named his loving and dear wife Elizabeth, son Jonathan, daughter Mary Merrable, grandchild Hannah Bucknam and grandchild Elizabeth Bucknam (under 18).

There is a comment made in the Great Migration Study that even though George Knower lived in Massachusetts for more than fifty years, very little is known about him.

George wasn’t a freeman (entitled to vote), apparently didn’t join the church and doesn’t appear in court lawsuits. He must have just minded his own business and lived his life!
