Robert Lupton & Margaret Ellis, Keighley, Yorkshire, England, 1500s

As July comes to a close so does the new information being added to the Ogden branch of my family tree as I finish up with a family sketch of Robert Lupton & Margaret Ellis of Keighley, Yorkshire, England.

Robert Lupton was born c1537, based on a typical age for marriage of 25 years. He married Margaret Ellis on 28 June 1562 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England. She was likely born c1540.

Because couples typically married in the bride’s church and Robert Lupton raised his family in Keighley, it is very possible that both Robert and Margaret were born in the village. However, church baptismal records don’t extend quite that far back in time.

Robert and Margaret (Ellis) Lupton were the parents of perhaps nine children (All events in Keighley). Note the comments afterwards on the three children whose names are in bold font:

  1. Robert, baptized 1 May 1563; buried 16 July 1563
  2. Helen, baptized 4 June 1564; married Richard Beaumont, 23 November 1584
  3. Elizabeth, baptized 1 May 1566; no further record
  4. Margaret, baptized 18 August 1566; married William Watkinson, 17 February 1589
  5. John, baptized 25 July 1568; died May 1624; married Margaret Sugden, 18 July 1597
  6. Christopher, baptized 24 December 1570; died May 1613; married Isabel Snowden, 23 December 1594
  7. Richard, baptized 9 August 1573; buried 17 July 1626; married Alice (MNU)
  8. Robert, baptized 8 April 1576; buried 18 February 1588
  9. Emme, baptized 10 February 1584

Keighley church registers include the baptisms of all the children purported to have been born to Robert Lupton and Margaret Ellis.

However, and this is a big however, I don’t find more than one adult Robert Lupton in this time period, but that doesn’t mean there might not have been a second man of the same name. These early church registers only name the father.

Elizabeth and Margaret were both baptized in 1566. It’s possible that they were twins and maybe the health of Elizabeth required her to be baptized close to the day of her birth. No further record is found of her and she may have died soon after birth.

The other important item to note is that there is a eight year gap between the births of Robert and Emme. Also, no record has been found that points to a birth year for Margaret Ellis, but assuming that she was a few years younger than Robert, it is possible that she is the mother of Emme, whose mother’s name is omitted from her baptismal record.

Robert Lupton was buried in the Keighley churchyard in April 1609. Margaret survived her husband by four years, being buried in Keighley on 19 May 1613.

Christopher Lupton & Isabel Snowden, Keighley, Yorkshire, England, 1500s

Before I finish up with the new Ogden family data, two more generations in my family tree can be added – those of the parents and grandparents of Ellen Lupton, who married Richard Ogden.

Today’s family sketch will examine her parents and siblings. As with many online trees, there are some facts which are supported by documents and there are some choices that have no support for them. In fact, there are even some records which seem to prove errors have been made.

Let’s begin with the facts.

Christopher Lupton was baptized on 24 December 1570 at St. Andrew’s Church in Keighley, Yorkshire, England, the son of Robert Lupton. Isabel Snowden was born c1572, place undetermined and no parents have been identified for her.

Christopher Lupton and “Izabell Snowden” married on 23 December 1594 in Keighley.

Children (All baptized in Keighley, Yorkshire, England):

  1. John, 4 June 1595; no further record
  2. Ellen/Helen, 20 February 1597/98; married Richard Ogden, 1 September 1618, Keighley, Yorkshire, England. This family disappears from the church records after 21 April 1639.
  3. William, 2 November 1600; no further record
  4. Robert, 2 November 1600; no further record

Christopher Lupton was buried in May 1613 in Keighley. Isabel is probably the “widow Lupton of Thwaites” who was buried on 2 June 1634 at St. Andrew’s Church in Keighley.

Now for the inaccurate details. Someone added Isabell in the FamilySearch family tree, but called her “Sowden,” probably a typo, but for those who don’t do their due diligence, but copy and paste, that typo can be a many trees by now.

Second, William and Robert, who probably were twins, given the single baptismal date and short time span between their births and Ellen’s baptism, are often not included in family trees.

Instead, some have substituted one Thomas Lupton as a child of Christopher and Isabel, complete with a baptismal date i n1605 in Keighley. The problem is I haven’t found any such chld born to the couple and the FamilySearch family tree links this Thomas to another couple in another town.

Therefore, at this point, I believe Christopher and Isabel were the parents of four children and the only one about which much is known is their daughter Isabel.
