Samuel Pyle, died 1787, Greenville County, South Carolina – Brasher FAN Club

The Pyle family has long ties to the Brasher family and those ties appear to go back to John Pyle, brother of this Samuel Pyle, who died at the quite young age of 40 years.

Little is shared about Samuel online and I imagine his wife, Mary, who was the adminstratrix of his intestate estate, likely married again. However, no further information is known about her at this time.

On 21 November 1787, in Greenville County, South Carolina, Henry Machen [Mahen?], Aquilla Brazer, John Brazer and Michael Robins, or any three of them, were approved by the court to appraise Samuel Pyle’s estate.

The following court entry approved the appointment of widow Mary Pyle as administratrix. With both John and Aquilla Brasher serving as appraisers and the maiden name of Mary not known, I wondered if she might be a Brasher by birth.

While she isn’t Mary, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Constant) Brasher because that woman married James Seaborn, she might be a child of one of Thomas’s brothers – William or John – because I don’t know anything about their families. It is thought that William might have died by 1728, which would rule him out if he did indeed pass away by then, but John Brasher also removed to the Carolinas and could easily have a daughter born in the 1740s, like Samuel Pyle.

However, it’s also possible since Samuel’s brother, John Pyle, married Sarah Brasher, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Constant) Brasher, and they lived near each other, they might both have been appointed as a matter of family convenience.

The Pyle family reportedly left Chester county, Pennsylvania on their trek to North and South Carolina and, eventually, to Hopkins County, Kentucky.

I have found so many mentions of the Pyle name in Brasher records over many decades that it is worthwhile to share details about their first FAN club ties.

The Pyle family had ties to the Quaker church, with at least some of them holding membership. Colonel John Pyle, MD, is a patriot of the American Revolution, having cared for the wounded at the Battle of Lindley’s Mill in Orange County, North Carolina on 13 September 1781.

Interestingly, John Pyle was actually a Tory who commanded a Loyalist militia on 24 February 1781, resulting in Pyle’s Massacre. However, because of his actions tending to the wounded that following September, he was pardoned for his earlier activities.

John Pyle reportedly married Sarah [Baldwin?] and they were the parents of a large family.

John’s wife apparently predeceased him as she isn’t mentioned in his will, dated 13 June 1799, Chatham County, North Carolina.

His eight living children are mentioned, as son Samuel predeceased him.

Children:

  1. John, born 1746, Chester County, Pennsylvania; died 1818, Christian County, Kentucky; married Sarah Brasher, c1770, probably Orange County, North Carolina
  2. Samuel, born c1747, Pennsylvania; died 1787, Greenville County, South Carolina; married Mary (MNU), c1772 [No source given, but some say she was Mary Black, daughter of Hans and Agnes Black, which is certainly possible as the Blacks are also part of the FAN club.]
  3. Nicholas, born c1748; reportedly died 1829, Sangamon County, Illinois; married Ann [Black?], c1779
  4. Sarah, born 10 November 1750, Chester County, Pennsylvania; death date unproven; married Jonathan Lindley, 16 March 1768, Orange County, North Carolina
  5. William, born c1752, probably Chester County, Pennsylvania; died c1824, Christian County, Kentucky; ?perhaps married Elizabeth Kirby, 12 July 1799, Knox County, Kentucky
  6. Edith, born c1754, probably Chester County, Pennsylvania; died after 1820, reportedly in St. Charles County, Missouri; married James Steel, c1775, probably Chatham County, North Carolina
  7. Ann, born c1762, probably Chester County, Pennsylvania; married Thomas Steel, c1783, probably Chatham County, North Carolina
  8. Jehu, born c1766, probably Orange County, North Carolina; died after 1840; married Ruth Lindley, 8 August 1786, Orange County, North Carolina
  9. Susannah, born c1768, place uncertain; died January 1850, Chatham County, North Carolina, aged 82, per the mortality schedule; married David Justice, c1789, probably Chatham County, North Carolina

Although from this family sketch, it appears that the only Brasher tie was through John, who married Sarah Brasher, the Pyles and Brashers moved in Tandem from North Carolina to South Carolina and, finally, westward into Kentucky.
