FEEFHS – Excellent Eastern European Map Collection

The Foundation for Eastern European Family History Studies is an organization, formed in 1992, to “promote genealogical research in Eastern and Central Europe without any ethnic, religious, or social distinctions.”

Do you have ancestral lines in Eastern Europe? First, it’s important to understand the FEEFHS definition of Eastern Europe, which includes regions through history that had many changing names, governments and borders.

Today, FEEFHS recognizes the following modern day countries under it’s vision of Eastern Europe: Albania, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and Ukraine.

Do you have ancestors who lived in any of these places? If so, FEEFHS houses an excellent online Map Library.

The maps are divided into Austro-Hungarian Empire, Balkans, Europe – General, German Empire, Germans from Russia, Hutterite Map collection, Russian Empire – Asia, Russian Empire – Europe, and Scandinavia.

Map dates range form the 16th century (1500s) to post-World War I.

I like the map of Dominant Religions in Europe in 1618. They include Calvinists, Lutherans, Zwinglians, Moravians, Roman Catholics, Reclaimed to Roman Catholicism, Greek Orthodox and Mohammedans.

The maps aren’t searchable using an index, but the title give a good idea of what each map is showing.
