12 for ’26: Patrick McManus & Eleanor Stufflebeam

Today, we’ll delve into the descendants of Michael Stufflebeam (1763-c1830) through his daughter, Eleanor.

Eleanor Stufflebeam was born c1812 in Ohio, per census reports and, most likely in Pickaway County. She was a young girl when the family moved westward and settled in Lawrence County, Illinois where she grew up.

Eleanor married Patrick McManus on 19 May 1828 in Lawrence County when she was about 16 years old.

At the time of the 1830 census, Patrick and Eleanor lived in Warren County, Indiana next door to her mother, Abigail, and her older sister, Thursa, who married Benjamin Hulbert that summer. No children were in the home.

In 1840, the couple had returned to Lawrence county, Illinois and were enumerated as one male, 30-39, one female, 20-29, one female 15-19, one male 5-9 and one female under 5.

The adult male fits Patrick’s age and the oldest female fits Eleanor’s age. The female who is 15-19 is unknown. Perhaps she’s a younger sister of Patrick’s or a niece taken into their home.

They were still in Lawrence County in 1850, but removed to Saratoga, Marshall County, Illinois by 1860.
