Sarah Stufflebeam is the third child and oldest daughter of Jacob Stufflebeam who settled in Pickaway County, Ohio soon after 1810. The name/s of any wives he might have had are unproven so the name of Sarah’s mother is not known.
Sarah was born c1801, most likely in New York and she married John Eagleston on 1 April 1819, Pickaway County, Ohio.
Little is known about Sarah’s life as she died before 25 September 1840 when John married (2) Lucinda Watts, also in Pickaway County, Ohio.
John and Sarah were the parents of six or seven children, of whom four are know to have survived into adulthood.
The question of how many children they had arises from the 1840 census. The official census date is important in this case – 1 June 1840 – because the eldest female at home was 30-39 years old. That would fit Sarah as Lucinda was born c1817 and was only 23 in 1840.
That also appears to narrow the date of Sarah’s death to the summer of 1840 and John remarried quickly as he had small children at home.
In addition to the two adults, the Eagleston home also included 2 males, 15-19, one male 10-14, one female, 10-14, one male 5-9 and one male under 5.
Six children fit the family well according to later records with one exception. The youngest child is a male under 5. However, in 1850, the child at home in that age category is America, a daughter, born 1838. James and Harrison would be the two males 15-19 and William would be the male 5-9. The names of the male and female, both 10-14, are unknown.
Therefore, the 1840 census might have an error and the male under 5 was really a female under 5 or else the census taker missed a child and there was also a female under 5. Lucinda Watts was not previously married and brought no known children into her marriage with John Eagleston, so the answer is not found with her.

- America, born c1838, Ohio; died after 1850. She isn’t found in 1860, but might be the America Eagleston who married William Read, 3 May 1866, Franklin County, Ohio, particularly in light of her brother’s marriage in that same county. William and America Read haven’t been located in 1870.
Although only two known children of John and Sarah (Stufflebeam) Eagleston had married and had families, there are many descendants today.
