Jane Stufflebeam was born c1823, probably in Lawrence County, Illinois, the third child of John E. Stufflebeam and Eleanor Roland.
Like her sister Mary Ann, Jane spent her first few years living in Lawrence County but then moved on to Warren County, Indiana when she was 7 or 8 years old.
However, after marriage, Jane would live in Lawrence County, Illinois, Warren County, Indiana, then Davis County, Iowa, Iroquois County, Illinois and then Vernon County, Missouri.
Jane Stufflebeam married John S. Stufflebeam, who at this point I think was a son of Jacob Stufflebean in Pickaway County, Ohio on 12 February 1839 in Warren County, Indiana.
John S. Stufflebeam (I’ve never found even a hint as to what the middle initial S stands for) reported in censuses that he was born c1815 in Ohio.
It would be interesting to learn how they came to meet and marry since Michael’s branch moved away from Ohio by 1820. Perhaps this was an arranged marriage, but John was only 24 when he married and Jane was a young 16.
As with other family members, John S. and Jane were parents to many children – eleven known children – and only three died with no known descendants. That statement needs to be qualified – three for sure have no descendants (Francis, Jacob and George) but there are an additional three children about whom little is known.
Children: (Stufflebeam)
- Elizabeth Ellen, born November 1839, Lawrence County, Illinois; died 16 March 1864, Iroquois County, Illinois; married Robert Looker, c1860. It is thought that she is the mother of two of Robert’s daughters – Anna Jane and Ida Ellen, born 1861 and 1862.
- Francis M., born c1841, Lawrence County, Indiana; killed in battle on 19 September 1863, Chickamauga, Walker, Georgia during the Civil War. No descendants.
- John E., born c1843, Warren County, Indiana; died after 1860. After the Civil War, there are too many John Stufflebeam/n people running around and there is too much variation in birth years to know who is who. Whether this man died in the war or married and moved away is unknown. Unknown whether he has descendants.
- Henry Thomas, born c1845, Warren County, Indiana; died 27 April 1914, Polk County, Missouri; married Isabella Jane Lamar, 26 December 1867, Crawford County, Kansas. They were the parents of nine children, six of whom married and have descendants.
- Louisa, born c1847, Warren County, Indiana; died after 1860. She isn’t at home in 1850, but there is a three year old male, Marquise, there instead. That boy is not in the 1860 census so something is off with this person. No further record. Unknown whether there are descendants.
- Mary Jane, born 28 October 1849, Warren County, Indiana; died 2 March 1922, Pueblo County, Colorado; married James Collins, 17 December 1863, Ford County, Illinois. They were the parents of eight children, six of whom are known to have married and had children.
- Hiram, born c1851, Warren County, Indiana; died after 1880, possibly in Crawford County, Kansas [reportedly 12 February 1881 but no source found]; married Mary Brewer, c1868. Mary married (2) Sennet A. Palmer, c1884 and had several more children. Hiram and Mary were the parents of five children.
- Jacob Isaac, born January 1854, Warren County, Indiana; died between 1930-1940, probably St. Clair County, Missouri; married Delila Jane Elliott, c1880, probably in Kansas. They had no children.
- George W., born July 1856, Indiana, Illinois or Iowa; died between 1900-30 March 1901, probably Jefferson County, Colorado; married Julia Nelson Davis, c1882. They were the parents of four children. However, two had no children and none of the four children had any grandchildren. No descendants.
- Michael Theodore, born 23 December 1858, Iroquois County, Illinois; died 7 February 1907, Payne County, Oklahoma; married Sarah Jane Hoopingarner, c1881. They were the parents of six children.
- Leanna Lucretia, born 24 September 1863, Illinois; died 30 May 1944, Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma; married James S. Hoopingarner, 26 December 1880, Vernon County, Missouri. They were the parents of twelve children, eleven living in 1910.
John S. Stufflebeam died before 23 February 1874, Crawford County, Kansas. Jane died between 1880 and 1900, possibly in Vernon County, Missouri where she lived in 1880.
