Today, we’ll take a look at children #8 and #8 of Caspar and Catharine (MNU) Stoehr/Starr of Rowan County, North Carolina.
Anna Starr was born c1776, the seventh child of Caspar and Catherine. She married Charles Poston, 13 February 1797, Surry County, North Carolina.
However, it MIGHT appear that she died before her father wrote his will in 1808:
2nd I give and Bequeath unto my son in law Charles Posten Five Shillings in full of his legacy AND
And it is my will and desire that the remaining part of Said Monies Shall be divided share and share alike among my Seven Children named as follows (Viz) John Stoehr, Casper Stoehr, Adam Stoehr, Peggy Little (widow of Abraham Little), Sarah Maggoty (widow of Thomas Maggot), Mary Brindle (wife of John Brindel), and Rachel Long (wife of Frederick Long).
However, in spite of Caspar’s statements in his will, no further marriages have been found for Charles Poston even though the 1810 census of Rowan County, North Carolina and the 1820 census of Floyd County, Indiana indicate a growing family.
Charles and Anna Poston lived in Salisbury, Stokes County, North Carolina at the time of the 1800 census. There was one male, 26-45 and one female, 16-25, at home with two females under ten. Given that this couple married in 1791, it seems fair to estimate that the girls were born in 1798 and early in 1800.
In 1830, Ann Poston is in Sullivan County, Indiana, aged 50-59 with one male 15-19 years old. That would fit her purported son James, below. {I have not found any document linking Ann and James, except unsourced online information.
Further research finds Anna living with son John in Sullivan County, Indiana in 1850. She is identified as 70 years old, so born c1780 in North Carolina.
Children:
- Sarah (Sally), born c1798, North Carolina; married David [Lorring?], 20 February 1814, Harrison County, Indiana
- Daughter, born c1800, North Carolina
- Daughter, born c1802, North Carolina
- Lucinda, born c1804, North Carolina; married Grenville Poston, 31 August 1824, Harrison County, Indiana with consent of Perry Lankford
- John, born c1805, North Carolina; died between 1850-1860, probably Sullivan County, Indiana; married (1) Unknown, c1827, probably Indiana (2) Harriet (MNU), before 1850. She was born c1807, Pennsylvania and it appears they had no children. In 1830, there was a female 20-29 at home and a female under 5.
- Daughter, born 1805-1810
- James, born c1811; died 7 April 1849, Sullivan County, Indiana
- Son, born 1811-1820
- Son, born 1811-1820
Unfortunately, no will or probate has been found for Charles Poston, who died between 1820 and 1830, possibly in Floyd County, Indiana, which was set off from Harrison County in 1819.

Adam Starr was born c1777 and died before May 1821, when the administration of his estate began. He married Keziah Watkins, 11 March 1802, Surry County, North Carolina. Probate proves that they were the parents of eight children and James Cornell was named as their guardian. Nothing is mentioned about the widow in his probate and it isn’t known if she survived him or not.
Children:
- Isaac, born 4 September 1803; died after 1830, possibly in Clark County, Indiana; married Nancy Griffin, 12 July 1826, Clark County, Indiana
- Jane, born 4 May 1805, North Carolina; died 4 June 1889, DeWitt County, Illinois; married William Walden, 25 January 1825, Clark County, Indiana
- Catherine, born c1807; living in 1827 when she is named as one of Adam’s children; no further record
- Frances (Fanny), born c1809, North Carolina; died 17 January 1851, Madison County, Indiana; married Ira Ellis, 2 February 1830, Rowan County, North Carolina
- Judith, born c1812, North Carolina; died after 1860 census, possibly DeWitt County, Illinois; married Elijah Walden, 23 November 1829, Clark County, Indiana
- Matthew, born 20 January 1814, North Carolina; died 16 November 1895, Madison County, Indiana; married (1) Editha Bowden, 22 April 1834, Rowan County, North Carolina (2) Emily Etchinson, c1840
- William, born 16 October 1816, North Carolina; died 1 January 1872, Madison County, Indiana; married Jane Rich, 2 December 1840, Davie County, North Carolina
- Mark, reportedly born 18 May 1818, North Carolina; died 22 July 1854, Clark County, Indiana; married Elizabeth Ann Hammond, 29 July 1841, Clark County, Indiana. However, Mark isn’t found in 1850 when Elizabeth is called “Hammond” and living back with her parents. Also in the home is Elizabeth Starr, born 1845. There is no gravestone pictured for Mark on Find-a-Grave. It seems more likely that he died before 1850.
Next, family sketches will be provided for the two youngest children of Casper & Catherine (MNU) Starr, Sarah and Rachel.
