Will of Patience Coleman, Cumberland Co., VA, 1771; Releasing Neptune, Janney, Hannah & Peter

Daniel and Patience Coleman lived in Cumberland County, Virginia and each left wills detailing not only their children, but also the names of their enslaved people. The maiden name of Patience is unknown. Her husband Daniel, predeceased her in 1770. Daniel was the son of another Daniel Coleman and grandson of Robert Coleman and Elizabeth Grizzell.

Daniel Coleman wrote his own will years before he died, as it is dated 29 August 1763, but probated on 22 January 1770. His will was posted earlier this month.

Patience wrote her will near the very end of her life, as it is dated 18 July 1771 and probated 26 August 1771.

While Daniel named numerous slaves – Natt, Judith and children Morning and Hannah, Janney, Hester and children Lid and Tom, Annis, Hannah (again), Jupiter and Tom, Patience named only four – Nepton (probably Neptune), Janney, Hannah and her son, Peter.
