Old Time Fun, c1920

Edward Stufflebean on toy vehicle, c1920

I wish this photo was clearer. The original in my collection is one of those small (2 x 3 inch) photos and the focus isn’t very sharp.

This is my father-in-law, Edward Stufflebean, who was born in 1917, at a family gathering about 1920, judging by his age here. I strongly suspect that he was at the home of John Henry Stufflebean, his grandfather, in Norman, Oklahoma, where most of the Stufflebeans lived at the time.

I know that it’s a family get-together because I have other pictures that were taken at the same time, likely on the same roll of film.

What I would like to know is this – was the toy vehicle that Ed is sitting on a reproduction of an early car or a farm utility vehicle, a wagon or something else??? If Ed had been sitting in the back of it, it might be easier to figure out what it was supposed to be.

If you have any ideas, please leave a comment.

  1. Linda, I wonder if you might be able to find a similar riding toy advertised in newspapers of the time or possibly a Sears or Montgomery Ward catalog. If this were my photo and I wanted to know I would look at some December newspapers. Even in the 1920s there were plenty of ads for toys.

It is too bad it isn’t clearer. I have too many photos that “give the impression” but that aren’t clear enough to tell details.

    I love his little hat.
