George Michael & Margaret Stufflebeam, Pickaway County, Ohio

Margaret Stufflebeam was the fifth child and third daughter of Jacob Stufflebeam and his unknown wife.

Margaret was born c1805, probably New York, but her family moved to Ohio when she was a child and she seems to have spent the rest of her life in Pickaway County, Ohio.

Margaret Stufflebeam married George Michael, 27 January 1821, Pickaway County, Ohio.

Margaret appears on 17 October 1887, when she filed for a widow’s pension for George’s Civil War service and she is also found in the 1890 Civil War veterans census schedule. However, she isn’t found in 1900 and likely died during that decade.

They were the parents of seven children.

Children: (Michael)

  1. Rebecca, born c1825, Ohio; 14 March 1908, Paulding County, Ohio where she lived when enumerated in the veterans’ 1890 census schedule; married Harrison Eagleston, 14 April 1842, Pickaway County, Ohio. Rebecca and Harrison were cousins, as he is the son of Margaret’s sister, Sarah (Stufflebeam) Eagleston. They were the parents of four children.
  2. Son, born 1826-1830
  3. Lucinda, born c1827, Ohio; died after 1900, probably Franklin County, Ohio; married John Armentrout, 29 December 1842, Pickaway County, Ohio. They were the parents of ten children.
  4. Martha Ann, born c1829, Ohio; died after 1861; married (1) John Moratt, 27 December 1843, Pickaway County, Ohio. John died as a young man, writing his will on 11 January 1854 and it was proved in May 1854. Martha had three children at home in 1860, but only the eldest could be John’s son. The other children were two and three years old. Martha married (2) William S.D. Ford, 24 March 1861, Pickaway County, Ohio. Neither is found in 1870 and Martha’s children William Moratt and Margaret Sinder are living with her parents at that time.
  5. John, born c1832, Ohio; died after 1880; married Sarah High, 13 January 1859, Pickaway County, Ohio. They were the parents of ten children, but only three living in 1900.
  6. William, born c1834, Ohio; died 12 September 1913, Putnam County, Ohio; married Martha Williams, about 30 December 1855, Pickaway County, Ohio. No further record and neither is found in the 1860 census.
  7. Sabina, born c1836, Ohio; married Uriah Ingram, 17 June 1870, Union County, Ohio. They were paupers in 1880 and Sabina was an inmate at Columbus State Hospital in 1900. It appears she had no children. No descendants.

This family has some murky areas in terms of following some of the children and their spouses/children. In spite of those difficult lines, George and Margaret (Stufflebeam) Michael have many descendants today.

If you are descended from this couple and can help fill in some of the missing details, please leave a comment. I would love to hear from you.

John Bailey & Jane Stufflebeam, Pickaway County, Ohio

Jane Stufflebeam was the fourth child and second daughter of Jacob Stufflebeam and his unproven wife. Her birth year varies slightly in the records, but she was born 28 July, about 1803, “Lake Erie” near Buffalo, New York per a census record.

Jane Stufflebeam married John Bailey, a War of 1812 veteran, 20 February 1817, Pickaway County, Ohio. They were the parents of eleven children, eight still living in 1887 when Jane died.

John was years older than his wife, born c1787 and he died in 1862. She survived him by many years, passing away on 28 April 1887, Five Points, Pickaway, Ohio.

The Bailey family raised their family in Pickaway County.

Children: (Bailey)

  2. Irwin, born c1819, Ohio. WARNING: No primary records have been found for IRWIN Bailey. Some online trees call him John Erwin/Irwin Bailey who died in the early 1860s. That man was married with several children. More work needs to be done to prove he was Irwin. That man’s birth year is placed c1822.

County, Ohio; married (1) William Scarberry, 6 January 1848, Pickaway County, Ohio (2) James W. Wilson, 10 October 1858, Pickaway County, Ohio. William and Ellen Scarberry were the parents of two children; James and Ellen were the parents of five more children.
  6. George Washington, born 29 March 1830, Ohio; died 26 July 1902, Grant County, Oklahoma; married Mary Ann Merrill, 22 February 1855, Pickaway County, Ohio. They were the parents of twelve children, seven living in 1900.
  7. Mary, born July 1832, Ohio; died 1925, Missouri or Illinois; married Alexander Grindall [aka Grindle, Grindol, etc], 8 December 1851, Pickaway County, Ohio. They were the parents of three children.

  10. Martha Jane, born 1838, Ohio; died after 1880; married Allen Crawford, 16 April 1854, Pickaway County, Ohio. They were the parents of at least seven children. There are children at home in 1870 who don’t match those in 1860. More work needs to be done.
  11. Elizabeth Ann, born 4 July 1840-1842, Ohio; died 17 January 1920, Pickaway County, Ohio; married Ira B. Darst, 15 February 1863, Pickaway County, Ohio. They were the parents of two children.

As seen, this was a large family so John and Jane have many descendants today.

12 for ’26: Descendants of Michael Stufflebeam Through Children of Daughter Marilla (Stufflebeam) Seeley (c1814-c1844)

We have finally come to the last family sketch of the descendants of Michael Stufflebeam (1763-c1830).

This, again, will be quite a short post because there is pedigree collapse in this line.

Marilla Stufflebeam was born c1814, likely in Pickaway County, Ohio. She married William Seeley, 22 February 1831, Warren County, Indiana and died between 6 September 1843, when her youngest child was born and 1845, when William Seeley remarried.

They were the parents of five children, but lost a son in childhood and also appear to have lost daughter Harriet, born c1841 and not found after 1850.

Additionally, youngest child, John B. Seeley, married his cousin, Isabella McManus, and their family sketch was presented a couple of days ago.

That leaves their two remaining children – Maria, born c1837 in Illinois and Henry, born 9 March 1839.

However, the life of Maria Seeley is a complete mystery as she married James Dawson, 29 May 1855, Peoria County, Illinois and the couple completely disappears from the records after their marriage. Neither has been found in the 1860 census, nor have likely candidates been found in marriage records in the event that one died soon after marriage.

That leaves son Henry Seeley as the subject of today’s family sketch.

Henry Seely, as mentioned, was born on 9 March 1839 in Illinois. He married Charlotte Marilla Caldwell on 1 January 1865, Peoria County, Illinois.

An aside – Marilla is not a terribly common given name for girls and, in spite of Henry’s mother and wife both carrying the name, no connection has, as yet, been found between the Caldwell family and any branch of the Stufflebeam family. There may be one, but no evidence documents any such relationship.

Like other family members, this family moved at least twice.

Children: (Seeley)

  1. Lewis Henry, born c1864, Illinois; died 19 December 1941, Spokane County, Washington; married Emma Virginia Gay, c1885. They were the parents of three children, two of whom married and had descendants.
  2. Nellie Elizabeth, born 12 December 1869, Peoria County, Illinois; died 24 January 1946, Calhoun County, Iowa; married Franklin Charles Mallory, 21 September 1887, Calhoun County, Iowa. They were the parents of two children.
  3. Charles Lester, born 5 September 1871, Peoria County, Illinois; died 7 July 1949, Valley County, Montana; married Anna Sophia Spiess, 31 May 1894, Calhoun County, Iowa. They were the parents of five children.
  4. William Thomas, born 7 May 1873, Fort Dodge, Webster, Iowa; died 4 July 1926, Malheur County, Oregon; married Gertrude McDaniels, 22 March 1899, Calhoun county, Iowa. They were the parents of two children.
  5. Clara Maria, born 16 September 1867, Illinois; died 23 May 1950, Calhoun County, Iowa; married Dewitt Stutley Parker, c1886. They were the parents of six children.

Henry Seeley died on 31 December 1879 in Calhoun County, Iowa. Charlotte survived him by decades, dying on 26 March 1916, also in Calhoun County.

This concludes a month of lengthy family sketches covering the descendants of Michael Stufflebeam (1763-c1830) through at least he great grandchildren.

These sketches should provide enough of a road map for descendants today to determine how they fit into this family tree. It’s been a long month as this project became way more involved than I had first imagined, but it’s been fun to find all these distant cousins and well worth the time!
