Stephen Stufflebeam & Nancy Ann Mason, Pickaway County, Ohio

Stephen Stufflebeam was the sixth child and third son born c1809 to Jacob Stufflebeam and his unknown wife. He was probably born in New York, a few years before the family headed to Ohio.

Like Stephen’s sister Sarah, Stephen died before 1850 so not a lot is known about his life. However, Stephen apparently lived in Muskingunm county for a short time as a young unmarried man.

In 1824, Stephen Stufflebeam and Daniel Bean [perhaps related to Keziah who married Jacob Stufflebeam Jr.?] were indicted for larceny in Muskingum County. The writ was returned and marked “not found.”

Stephen Stufflebeam married Nancy Mason on 11 February 1830 in Pickaway County.

He died about April 1844 in Pickaway County, Ohio. Nancy survived her husband and is found in the 1850 census with their four children.

Children: (Stufflebeam)

  1. Mary, born December 1831, Pickaway County, Ohio; died 1905; married Theodore Seaburn, 5 November 1848, Pickaway County, Ohio. They were the parents of at least six children.
  2. Martha Ann, born December 1833, Pickaway County, Ohio; died 11 January 1872; married William H. Moore, 10 May 1849, Pickaway County, Ohio. This couple has not been found in 1850.
  3. Thomas G., born c1835, Pickaway County, Ohio; died after 1863 when he appears i the Civil War draft registrations of Wayne, Pickaway, Ohio. He was unmarried at that time. No further record.
  4. George, born 1832, Pickaway County, Ohio; died 21 November 1863, Huntsville, Alabama; married Jane K. (Roseberry) Harness, 14 June 1860, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. They were the parents of one daughter, Dollie.

There are some descendants of Stephen and Nancy (Mason) Stufflebeam, but no male descendants carrying the surname as George died in the Civil War, leaving only a daughter and it’s possible that Thomas died in the war, unmarried. Furthermore, Martha disappears from the records after her marriage.

That leaves eldest child Mary who married Theodore Seaburn who has descendants today.

George Michael & Margaret Stufflebeam, Pickaway County, Ohio

Margaret Stufflebeam was the fifth child and third daughter of Jacob Stufflebeam and his unknown wife.

Margaret was born c1805, probably New York, but her family moved to Ohio when she was a child and she seems to have spent the rest of her life in Pickaway County, Ohio.

Margaret Stufflebeam married George Michael, 27 January 1821, Pickaway County, Ohio.

Margaret appears on 17 October 1887, when she filed for a widow’s pension for George’s Civil War service and she is also found in the 1890 Civil War veterans census schedule. However, she isn’t found in 1900 and likely died during that decade.

They were the parents of seven children.

Children: (Michael)

  1. Rebecca, born c1825, Ohio; 14 March 1908, Paulding County, Ohio where she lived when enumerated in the veterans’ 1890 census schedule; married Harrison Eagleston, 14 April 1842, Pickaway County, Ohio. Rebecca and Harrison were cousins, as he is the son of Margaret’s sister, Sarah (Stufflebeam) Eagleston. They were the parents of four children.
  2. Son, born 1826-1830
  3. Lucinda, born c1827, Ohio; died after 1900, probably Franklin County, Ohio; married John Armentrout, 29 December 1842, Pickaway County, Ohio. They were the parents of ten children.
  4. Martha Ann, born c1829, Ohio; died after 1861; married (1) John Moratt, 27 December 1843, Pickaway County, Ohio. John died as a young man, writing his will on 11 January 1854 and it was proved in May 1854. Martha had three children at home in 1860, but only the eldest could be John’s son. The other children were two and three years old. Martha married (2) William S.D. Ford, 24 March 1861, Pickaway County, Ohio. Neither is found in 1870 and Martha’s children William Moratt and Margaret Sinder are living with her parents at that time.
  5. John, born c1832, Ohio; died after 1880; married Sarah High, 13 January 1859, Pickaway County, Ohio. They were the parents of ten children, but only three living in 1900.
  6. William, born c1834, Ohio; died 12 September 1913, Putnam County, Ohio; married Martha Williams, about 30 December 1855, Pickaway County, Ohio. No further record and neither is found in the 1860 census.
  7. Sabina, born c1836, Ohio; married Uriah Ingram, 17 June 1870, Union County, Ohio. They were paupers in 1880 and Sabina was an inmate at Columbus State Hospital in 1900. It appears she had no children. No descendants.

This family has some murky areas in terms of following some of the children and their spouses/children. In spite of those difficult lines, George and Margaret (Stufflebeam) Michael have many descendants today.

If you are descended from this couple and can help fill in some of the missing details, please leave a comment. I would love to hear from you.
