Today’s vintage photo is going home to a great-great-great grandchild of Andrew Philip Gilkey.

Andrew was born on 25 March 1809 and died on 23 February 1890, both in Islesboro, Waldo, Maine. He married twice, first to Azubah Veazie on 20 March 1831. Azubah was born c1811 and died on 14 November 1839. Andrew’s second marriage was to Philena Parker on 3 January 1841. She was the widow of Jordan Veazie, Andrew’s brother-in-law. Both marriages took place in Waldo County, Maine.
He was a house joiner, kind of a specialized carpenter, by trade.
Andrew had children with both wives.
Children of Andrew and Azubah:
- Andrew Philip, born 28 November 1832; died 12 July 1849, Waldo County, Maine
- Lycurgus P., born 11 April 1834, Waldo County, Maine; died 6 January 1902, Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland; married Sarah Josephine Sprague, c1858. Lycurgus was a sea captain.
Children of Andrew and Philena:
- Philip E., born 3 September 1843, Waldo County, Maine; died 6 December 1854, Waldo County, Maine
- Ethalinda Chestina, born 18 May 1845, Waldo County, Maine; died 28 February 1878, Waldo County, Maine; married Benjamin R. Redman, c1862
- Andrew Johnson, born c1849, Waldo County, Maine; died 28 March 1873, Waldo County, Maine. In 1870, he was unmarried, a mariner by occupation, and living at home with his parents
Of Andrew’s five children, only two – Lycurgus and Ethalinda – have descendants today.
Andrew’s daughter Ethalinda was the mother of six children – Elnora Adele, born October 1862; died after 1940, possibly Cambridge, Massachusetts and married Charles Williams, c1880; Walter Herman, born 22 September 1864; died 22 January 1953 and married Emma Violet Platt, c1890 ; Ralph Winchester, born 15 June 1868; died 24 January 1946 and married Grace Derby Parker; Emerson P., born 1869; died 11 December 1869, an unnamed daughter born 4 June 1873; died 19 September 1873, Chestina Blessie, born 2 March 1876; died 8 April 1879.
Lycurgus was the father of two daughters, Maybelle Josephine, born 1859; died 1927, who married Fred L. Clayton and had one son and one daughter and Leila Evelyn, born December 1862; died 6 March 1935 who married Henry D. Pike. It appears Leila had no children.
Lycurgus’s daughter Maybelle is the line through which the recipient of this photo follows.
Maybelle Josephine Gilkey married Fred L. Clayton and this branch of the family moved to Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland, likely due to the men’s occupations as mariners.
Maybelle was the mother of two children, son Edward, born April 1882; died 1938 in Baltimore, unmarried and daughter Sadie Evelyn, born 1883; died 1965, also in Baltimore.
Sadie married William C. Reid and had two children. One of her grandchildren will be receiving this special photo in the mail. 🙂
