America250 Celebration: Mount Vernon’s Historic Image Collection

America’s 250th birthday celebration has been in full swing for a few months now.

The man who led the fight for independence, the Father of Our Country, George Washington, lived at Mount Vernon, Virginia, adjacent to Washington, DC.

I’ve been fortunate to visit Mount Vernon several times and it is a working relic of our history with a beautiful view of the Potomac River.

The George Washington Presidential Library maintains a digital collection of historical photos of Mount Vernon.

To virtually visit during our America250 celebration, begin with the finding aid to the Historical Photograph Collection to get a feel for what can be viewed.

Next, you can browse the Mount Vernon Estate Images:

There are all types of images online – from the gardens to Washington’s Tomb to views of the mansion and grounds in the early 1900s.

You can see Martha’s kitchen, storm damage, servants’ quarters, and various roads/paths across the plantation.

Some photos are black and white/sepia, while others are color. There also seems to be some vintage postcards in the collection, too.

Take a few minutes to browse this collection. You’ll almost feel like you’ve visited in person.

Celebrate America250!
