Presidents’ Day 2026

Today’s Presidents’ Day postcard is a bit different, honoring William McKinley:

William McKinley, twenty-fourth President of the U.s. elected twice. Inaugurated for the first time March 4, 1897 and entered on his second term March 4, 1901.

The back of the postcard adds:

William McKinley was born at Niles, Ohio on Jan. 29, 1843 and was 53 years old when inaugurated President. During his first term the Spanish-American Ward and the annexation of the Philippines were successfully concluded. Six months after his re-election he was assassinated and died Sept. 14, 1901, the third martyr President of the U.S.

Abraham Lincoln was, of course, the first President assassinated while in office. The second, not nearly as well known, was James A. Garfield in 1881. Garfield was shot on 2 July 1881, but didn’t died until 19 September 1881, more than two months later.

This postcard was created by Raphael Tuck & Sons as part of the “Presidents of the United States” series. The undivided back (not shown here) puts its publication no later than 1907, when divided backs first appeared.

A bit of further digging reveals that the Presidential series was published in 1905, just four years after McKinley’s death.

  1. Very nice colorized Presidential post card! I especially like the succinct summary of the President’s accomplishments.
