George Francis Fabyan Roberts (1863-1943), Gorham, ME: Going Home

George Francis Fabyan Roberts was born 27 June 1863 in Gorham, Cumberland, Maine, the second of five children born to Leonard C. and Maria Louisa (Hamblen) Roberts.

George married (1) Florence Cushman, 10 September 1881, Penobscot County, Maine. She died of TB on 29 October 1898 in Bangor, leaving George with three small children:

  1. Elsie Mildred, born 27 August 1891, Bangor, Penobscot, Maine; died 7 January 1929, of TB, Roxbury, Washington, Vermont; married Leon Henry Spaulding, 1 September 1917, Roxbury, Washington, Vermont. She and Leon buried three infant children. Two daughters, Marie Florence and Beatrice Arlene, survived.
  2. Mary Dolly, born 9 September 1892, Bangor, Penobscot, Maine; died 1926, Washington County, Vermont; married Henry Alden Jones, 20 June 1915, Northfield, Washington, Maine. They were the parents of at least two sons and a daughter.
  3. Lloyd Cushman, born 2 February 1895, Bangor, Penobscot, Maine; died after 1943, when he applied for Social Security. Noting further has been found.

George, like many others, left Maine for Massachusetts, where he married (2) Alice A. Underwood on 13 December 1905 in Natick, Middlesex, Massachusetts. They may have adopted a daughter, Emily, born 1905, Massachusetts, as she is not living with George and Alice in 1910, but is enumerated as their daughter in 1920.

However, by 1910, Florence’s three children have been sent to live with others. Elsie was boarding with George and Jane Abbott, in Northfield, Washington, Vermont. Mary’s home hasn’t been identified in 1910, but she, too, was living in Northfield by 1915, when she married. Lloyd, 15, was boarding with George and Louise King in Northfield.

There had to have been some extended family there for all three children to end up there, but George apparently didn’t remain in their lives.

George died on 11 March 1943 and was buried in Gorham.

His photo has gone home to a great grandchild.
