The Great Migration Directory, Immigrants to New England, 1620–1640 ― A Concise Compendium, 2nd Edition by Robert Charles Anderson, FASG: Book Review

This newly published book was on my Christmas wish list and Genea-Santa left it under the tree for me. I was thrilled!

Robert Charles Anderson, FASG, departed this life almost a year ago, in February 2025. However, he left New England genealogists with a treasure called The Great Migration Study Project.

The second edition of the directory is simply a biographical compendium of all the identified names associated with immigration into the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1620 until 1640.

Table of Contents

In Memoriam: Robert Charles Anderson
Introduction
A Note About the Organization of the Great Migration Volumes
Key to Titles

Chapters by Surname – A to Z

Appendix: Retired Sketches
Index Section

There are 5,700 sketches in this compendium, including 82 new ones.

There isn’t much to say about a book with entries in ABC order.

However, I highly recommend this book for any serious researcher looking at early New England ancestry. It is a book that will be consulted frequently as I go through my tree cleaning up source citations and possibly extending some of my colonial ancestors back to their English origins.

The Great Migration Directory, (10th Anniversary), Immigrants to New England, 1620–1640 ― A Concise Compendium, Second Edition by Robert Charles Anderson, FASG can be ordered directly from American Ancestors for $69.95.

It can also be purchased on everyone’s favorite purchasing site, but the price is the same. However, it is temporarily out of stock on that website. Also, be sure that you choose the Second Edition, not the original volume, which, for whatever reason, is still on offer for the hefty price of $111.81 or 54.99 on Kindle. Just visit the American Ancestors website instead.
