Abraham Teague, died 1795, Rowan County, North Carolina, Part 2

While casting a wide net to capture members of the Brasher FAN club, I’ve come across documents that pertain to other families not in my husband’s ancestral tree.

Not much seems to be found in online trees that is fully accurate, so several posts this month will present family sketches that are not related to my family AND I have no further information about them, but it might help others to continue to document these families.

Today’s family sketch is that of Abraham Teague who died in Rowan County, North Carolina by October 1795. He left no will, but his heirs are identified in Rowan County records.

Abraham Teague was the son of Moses Teague, who died just two years before, in 1793, also in Rowan County.

Moses, a Revolutionary War soldier, did leave a will dated 24 August 1793:

The Teagues followed the migratory path of the Brasher FAN club through Virginia, first to North Carolina and, eventually, on to South Carolina.

Abraham Teague was born c1745, possibly in Frederick County, Virginia. he married Hannah Brasher, daughter of Thomas Brasher and his second wife, Hannah (MNU), c1767, likely in Orange County, North Carolina, where the Brashers has settled.

Abraham’s estate administration calls him Abraham ‘Tague’ and was easily found using FamilySearch full-text search:

Abraham’s marriage date and the birth years for his children are estimated by the fact that four children were underage when he died, indicating a fairly young man. Therefore, if named in birth order, then Isaac was born no later than 1774 to be of legal age in 1795.

Children of Abraham and Hannah (Brasher) Teague:

  1. Joab (or Jacob?), born c1768
  2. Hezekiah, born c1770
  3. John, born c1772
  4. Isaac, born c1774
  5. William, born c1776
  6. Abraham, born c1778
  7. Aquilla, born c1780
  8. Moses, born c1782

Hannah Teague was head of household in 1800 with the family make up as 2121-10001, or two males under 10, one male 10-16, two males 16-26 and one male 26-45. There was one female uder ten and one female over 45.She apparently died before 1810, as none of the Teagues have a female over 45 at home in that census.

The FamilySearch family tree has no children for Abraham and Hannah and estimates his birth year as 1774, way too late.

It appears that most of these sons remained in the Rowan County area after marriage as the 1820 census shows 13 Teague families in Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina.
