Spartanburg County South Carolina Minutes of the County Court 1785-1799 by Brent Holcomb: Book Review

There aren’t many books that I buy nowadays in hard copy for my genealogical research. Sometimes, though, the book in hand is the easiest format to accomplish a lot of searching.

I made an exception for this book because my husband has multiple ancestors, and collateral lines, that ventured from North Carolina into Spartanburg County, South Carolina right after the close of the American Revolution.

I have to admit that Spartanburg County South Carolina Minutes of the County Court, 1785-1799 by Brent Holcomb is a terrific book.

There is no Table of Contents. Instead, there is a one-page introduction by Mr. Holcomb explaining the years covers in what eventually became four volumes of records.

This book was originally published in 1980 by Southern Historical press, which currently has no brick-and-mortar store open, but does offer its books for sale online.

By the way, these records are NOT digitally available on FamilySearch!

There are 307 pages of abstracted information plus an 18-page index that includes all the spelling variations for the surnames in the records.

The book was available on Prime for $35 and free shipping.

Because of the ancestral ties to the early years of Spartanburg County, this is a book that I will peruse often!

  1. Wow – a treasure for genealogists researching in that county! Definitely an auto-buy, especially as the information isn’t available digitally.
