Today, we’ll look at the descendants of Caspar & Catherine (MNU) Stoehr/Starr through his daughters, Margaret and Mary Ann.
Margaret Starr, also called Peggy, was born c1768, place unknown. She married Abraham Little, 11 December 1788, Surry County, North Carolina. However, their marriage was short lived as Abraham died before the 1800 census, when Margaret was head of household living in Rowan County, North Carolina.
Abraham and Margaret were the parents of two children, both baptized in the Hope Moravian Church in today’s Forsyth County, North Carolina.
Children:
- Adam, born 7 September 1789, probably Randolph County, North Carolina, where the family lived in 1790.
- Catherine, born 28 October 1791, Davidson County, North Carolina; died after 1850 when she lived with several of her children in Davie County, North Carolina; married John Barnacastle, 17 August 1807, Rowan County, North Carolina
Adam Little doesn’t seem to ever have married. He is enumerated in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1820, as a male 26-45 with one enslaved person.
However, in the same year, he sold his land [DB 26:169] to his mother, Margaret Little. He removed to Davie County, North Carolina, where his sister Catherine’s family was living.
Adam died, apparently unmarried, with his nephew, Pleasant Barnacastle taking administration of his estate in May 1842 i Davie County, North Carolina.
Catherine (Little) Barnacastle survived her husband, John, who died in 1844 in Davie County, North Carolina. Catherine is last found in the 1850 census living with her son Pleasant and other family members.
Children of John and Catherine (Little) Barnacastle:
- Pleasant, born 30 September 1808, North Carolina; unmarried in 1850 and living in Davie County, North Carolina; died October 1878, Davie County, North Carolina
- Levi, born c1813, North Carolina; died 1871, Davie County, North Carolina; married (1) Hannah Elrod, 8 September 1841 (2) Sarah Bowls, 9 September 1852, Davie County, North Carolina
- John, born c1816, North Carolina; died 30 June 1902, Davie County , North Carolina; married Mary Gullett, 25 November 1839, Davie County, North Carolina. They were the parents of eight children.
- Elijah, born c1819, North Carolina; died 1877, Davie County, North Carolina; married Mary (MNU), c1847. They were the parents of four daughters.
- Margaret, born c1824, North Carolina; died after 1870; married Samuel Beeding, 3 January 1846, Davie County, North Carolina. Samuel died in 1855; he was 31 years older than Margaret. They were the parents of two sons. Margaret may have had another son and daughter by unknown fathers, as they were at home in 1870.
- Ann, born c1826, North Carolina; died 2 August 1903, Davie County, North Carolina; married Daniel Spry, 30 January 1847, Davie County, North Carolina. They were the parents of at least one son, James, and possibly two, Ellis, born 1861.
- Benjamin, born c1828, North Carolina; died 23 May 1886, Davie County, North Carolina; married Mary Hendricks/Hendrix, 11 March 1858, Davie County, North Carolina. They were the parents of six children.
- Matilda, born c1832, North Carolina; died November 1869, Davie County, North Carolina of pneumonia [mortality schedule]; married George Sidden, 10 April 1856, Davie County, North Carolina. They were the parents of six children.
Margaret (Starr) Little never remarried. She died before February 1849, also in Davie County, North Carolina and, again, Pleasant Barnacastle served as administrator.
Margaret’s sister, Mary Ann Starr, was born c1768, Maryland, per Moravian Church Records. She married John Brendle, 16 April 1789, Surry County, North Carolina.
Documenting the children is a bit trickier because only the births of two of their sons are found in the Moravian Church records. However, the family mades identification a bit easier for the rest of them as many are buried at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church in Clemmons, which today is in Forsyth County, North Carolina, where they have gravestones.
In 1800, the family was enumerated in Rowan County and the household members line up perfectly with John, Mary Ann and their four sons and one daughter born by that time.
In 1810, the family is still in Rowan County and generally aligns with their (purported) children in the church yard cemetery, but lacking one male under 10 and one female under 10 who are unaccounted for. That might indicate there are two more children who lived to adulthood not buried in that cemetery and who possibly have descendants today.
The 1820 census has incorrectly indexed “Brindle, John sen” as Johnson Brindle while he is living next door to his son, “Brindle, John jun.” Mary Anna died the previous winter, so she isn’t in the 7 August 1820 census. At home are John Brindle, senior, probably son William (male 26-44), and the unknown son from 1810, now the male 10-15. There are also two females, both 16-25 and two females, both 10-15. One of the females, 10-15, is likely the unknown daughter found in the 1810 census. The second female aged 10-15 was likely a daughter born after the 1810 census, but later that year, which is reasonable and fits in the gap before youngest child Charles was born in 1812. The two females aged 16-25 are a mystery.
Children:
- Abraham, born 19 March 1790, North Carolina; died 1 November 1834, Stokes County, North Carolina; married Alice Brown, 5 November 1811, Rowan County, North Carolina. [NOTE: Alice is incorrectly identified as a child of John and Mary Anna, as she is buried in the same cemetery. Alice was born 15 December 1789 and died 16 July 1815.]
- William, born 7 January 1793, Rowan County, North Carolina; died 24 December 1834, Davidson County, North Carolina. His estate administration doesn’t mention a wife. He might be the William “Brandle” who married Nancy Calloway, 16 October 1827, Surry County, North Carolina.
- Jasper, born 18 December 1794, Rowan County, North Carolina; died 7 April 1810, probably Rowan County, North Carolina.
- John, born c1796, North Carolina; married Sarah Mullikin, 30 January 1820, Rowan County, North Carolina
- Anna, born c1798, North Carolina; died 1802, probably Rowan County, North Carolina
- Eliza, born c1801, North Carolina; died 30 November 1810, Rowan County, North Carolina
- Nancy, born c1803, North Carolina; died 5 November 1815, North Carolina
- Daughter, born c1805, North Carolina; died after 1810 census
- Son, born c1808, North Carolina; died after 1810 census
- Daughter, born c1810, North Carolina; died after 1820 census
- Charles, born 7 May 1812, North Carolina; died 18 January 1816, North Carolina
