Today’s photo is an elegant wedding photograph. Sadly, less than two years later the bride was dead.

Anton Christian Mommsen was born 29 June 1874 in Germany and died 7 July 1942, Clinton County, Iowa. He was the son of christian Friedrich Mommsen and Anna Schrader.
Anton married twice, but his first marriage to Amelia Hagge was short, due to her early death.
Anton married Amelia Hagge on 19 June 1901, Jackson, Preston, Iowa. She was born on 17 February 1879 in Goose Lake, Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Peter Hagge and Gretje Margareta Kruse of Clinton County, Iowa. Both parents were born in Germany.
Amelia died on 23 February 1903, a few weeks after giving birth to her first and only child, Ralph Harvey Mommsen, but no death record has been found and cause of death is unknown.
Anton married (2) Marta/Martha Hagge, sister of his first wife, Amelia, on 12 April 1905, Clinton county, Iowa. Martha was about eight years older than her sister.
Anton was the father of two sons, one by each wife. Martha’s son was Elmer Herman Mommsen, born 13 June 1906, Jackson County, Iowa. He died about 12 August 1976 and married Dorothy Dietz, 23 December 1929, Jackson County, Iowa. They had no children.
Child of Anton and Amelia:
- Ralph Harvey, born 13 December 1902, Clinton County, Iowa; died 3 October 1942, Clinton County, Iowa; married Anna Sophia Eliza Kramer, 8 January 1930, Clinton County, Iowa.
Ralph and Anna were the parents of one daughter, Darla Amelia, born 22 January 1937, Iowa; died 3 July 2007. She married Robert D. Mellody and they were the parents of three children.
This photo is going home to one of Amelia’s grandchildren.
