Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: Your Favorite RootsTech 2025 Class

it’s march and spring is almost upon us! it’s also time for Saturday Night Genealogy Fun with Randy Seaver. This week’s challenge again pertains to RootsTech 2025:

1)  ‘Twas the week of RootsTech 2025, and all through the house, the genealogists were checking their RootsTech schedule.  What class did you absolutely love this week?

First, this, I think, is the first year in which I’ve not watched any live sessions at RootsTech, due to various appointments and places I’ve needed to be.

However, this challenge gives me a chance to vent my frustration with the 2025 recorded sessions. The first session I tried to view had no sound whatsoever and another virtual attendee commented on the issue. A RT person responded saying they were working on the issue.

Next, a session I was really looking forward to – The Manorial Court as a Source for Genealogists by Nick Barrett – was moved from Friday to Thursday. I wasn’t home when it was live and have tried three times to listen to the recording. The first time, the sound worked for about 10 minutes and then disappeared. My second and third tries produced the “Oops, something went wrong – try later” message and I’ve since given up.

I also tried to view a third recorded session and the “Oops” message again popped up.

Therefore, I haven’t been able to view a single recorded session yet. If Nick Barratt’s talk ever works, I think I will learn a lot as manorial records aren’t a resource about which I know very much.

UPDATE: Dr. Barratt’s class recording finally plays. His talk was excellent and I downloaded the syllabus.

I’m very disappointed in my RootsTech 2025 experience!

  1. I am so sorry you have had a bad experience with the recordings. It was my understanding that the recordings wouldn’t be available until after RootsTech was over, but I guess I was wrong.

  2. I’m so sorry you didn’t get to enjoy RootsTech, Linda. It is so frustrating when technology doesn’t work. I ran into some of the same problems yesterday and even stayed up until midnight to see a video that would not play. I’m glad you finally got to the class you wanted. It’s probably the best way to check them out – on your own time!
