This vintage photo caught my eye for two reasons – the first wasn’t the three infants, it was North Calais, Vermont. My maternal line includes Calais, Washington, Maine ancestors and I was aware of Calais, Vermont, which, coincidentally also happens to be located in Washington County. Aside from the town and county names, the only commonality is that both are located in New England.
Yes, second to catch my eye was the photo itself with three babies of a similar age, identified as Laura Persons, Truman LeBarron and Alva (no surname.)
With an unusual name like Truman LeBarron in a small town like Calais, Vermont, I figured this would be a quick project and I was right.
Truman Sheldon LeBarron was born on 9 September 1903 in Calais. He married Madine Agnes Rogers on 29 September 1928 in nearby Barre, Washington, Vermont. Truman died quite young, just a month past his 58th birthday on 5 October 1961, in Barre. Census records indicate that he and Madine were the parents of just one child, who is still living.
The 1910 census answered the question as to baby Alva with no surname recorded on the photo. Alva Myron was the twin brother of Truman, born 9 September 1903. Alva married Mary Folin on 28 June 1933 and removed to Connecticut. They were the parents of one son, Francis, born 1 February 1935 and who died on 3 October 2016. Francis married, but had no children.
Twins Truman and Alva were the sons of Frank F. LeBarron and Josie Titchout and were two of seven children born to the couple.
That left the third child, identified as Laura Persons. Laura May was born of 5 October 193, the daughter of Delbert Joseph Persons and Linnie May Titchout.
The common link to these three babies are their mothers – Josie and Linnie – who were sisters, making Laura a first cousin of Truman and Alva.
Sadly, though, Laura May died on 3 December 1909, just past her sixth birthday, and is buried in the family plot at Fairview Cemetery in Calais. Her death certificate states that she died of tonsillitis.
From this short family sketch, only Truman has descendants (yes, his child married and had descendants, too) and this cute photograph has gone home to family members.
A genealogy good deed. In my husband’s family was a man named D’Alva Mosse, certainly no relation to these twins but interesting names!
