New Year, New Monthly Research Topics: Andrew Bandy Family: Descendants of George Bandy

With a new year beginning, I have decided to return to a research format of which I learned from Jacqi Stevens, the blogger at A Family Tapestry. From her, I got the idea to do a deep dive into one person or family per month. This methodology might not work quite as easily for beginning researchers, but for more advanced genealogists who have only a few leaves on certain branches of the family tree, or who have outright brick walls, dedicating a full month to one person or family can be very productive.

I put this method to use a few years ago and was quite pleased with the progress I made. With the passage of time and ever increasing numbers of records becoming available online, I decided to repeat my one person/one family per month project again this year.

The subject of January’s research is my husband’s Bandy family, long time Virginians until my husband’s 3X great grandfather, Andrew Bandy (1784-1867) decided to leave Virginia for Lawrence County, Ohio.

I’ve written many posts about the Bandy family – 30+ as seen by the topic list at the left side of the Empty Branches blog – but January’s focus will be on bringing the grandchildren and great grandchildren of Andrew Bandy and Rebecca Wooldridge into the family tree.

Andrew and Rebecca were the parents of eleven children, ten of whom lived to adulthood and married – George, Samuel Coleman, Martha, Mary, Nancy, Jane, Elizabeth, Andrew Jackson, Rebecca, William H. and Lucinda. I’ve written extensively about Mary Bandy, who is my husband’s 2X great grandmother. Scroll down the side of the blog to the topics. Bandy and Sturgell include stories about Mary. Rebecca Bandy apparently died after 1850, as no marriage records or further mentions of her have been found. That leaves nine children to cover and there are MANY descendants of Andrew and Rebecca (Wooldridge) Bandy so these posts will be lengthy.

Today, we’ll take a look at the descendants of Andrew and Rebecca through their oldest child, George Bandy.

George Bandy was born 25 December, probably in 1816, in Botetourt County, Virginia. He is descended from Richard Bandy (c1715-September 1795), John Bandy (c1752-between 16 February 1816 and December 1820) and then Andrew Bandy (c1784-1867).

George Bandy married (1) Elizabeth Caulley, 28 September 1838, Lawrence County, Ohio and they divorced between 1870-1876, probably right in Lawrence County. He married (2) Emma Stein, 16 November 1876, Lawrence County, Ohio.

George’s death date is unknown, but he was enumerated in the 1880 census of Lawrence County and Emma married (2) Charles Brainard, c1890. Given his age, George likely died and, as Emma reported having given birth to no children, they had no children together.

George and Elizabeth were the parents of four known children – Mary Jane, Lafayette, Julia A. and Malinda Adaline. Although Lafayette married in 1870, he died 7 months later on 6 March 1871 and has no known children. That means there are no male descendants named Bandy through George, as he had three surviving daughters.

Children of George and Elizabeth (Caulley) Bandy (All events in Lawrence County, OH unless otherwise noted):

I. Mary Jane, born 18 November 1837; died 4 April 1892; married Samuel Minear Goff, c1853. Samuel was born 15 July 1833, Ohio and died 19 July 1889. They were the parents of 8 or 9 children, as will be explained later in this post. Some descendants spell their surname as Goffe.

II. Lafayette, born 28 August 1839; died 6 March 1871; married (1) Adelphia Jane Miller (born c1838), 11 June 1861. She apparently died soon and left no known children. (2) Elizabeth Worthington, 16 August 1870. Elizabeth was born 29 February 1853, Kentucky; died 19 January 1923, Clark County, Ohio. Elizabeth had no known children with Lafayette, who died only 7 months after they married. No children.

III. Julia A., born 5 November 1840; died 10 April 1919, Marion County, Ohio; married Joseph Worthington, 2 December 1866. Joseph was born 26 June 1841, Kentucky and died 19 October 1923, Marion County, Ohio.

IV. Malinda Adaline, born 20 September 1842; died 27 March 1917; married (1) William Brooks, 19 January 1862. William was born c1842, Adams County, Ohio and died 6 February 1874, probably in Missouri. (2) James K. Brooks, 15 August 1876, Gallia County, Ohio. James was born May 1829, Ohio and died after 1900. Malinda had four children with William and two more with James. James K(esterson?) Brooks was the older brother of William Brooks.

Grandchildren of George and Elizabeth (Caulley) Bandy through daughter Mary Jane and Samuel Minear Goff/e (All events in Lawrence County, Ohio unless otherwise noted):

A. George Washington Goff, born c1854; died 1939; married America Hannah, 16 January 1879. She was born 1859, Greenup County, Kentucky; died 1935. George and America were the parents of two daughters.

B. Sarah Elizabeth Goff, born 5 August 1859; died 17 April 1937; married William Edgar Keeney, 17 October 1882. William was born 15 November 1860; died 8 May 1942, Ashland, Boyd, Kentucky. They were the parents of two children, but only one living in 1900.

C. John Frank Goff, born 31 December 1860; died 19 September 1931; married Mintie Carpenter, 22 October 1894, Gallia County, Ohio. They were the parents of one son, Ernie Franklin Goff, born 30 September 1899, Gallia County, Ohio; died 11 May 1978, Scioto County, Ohio. He never married. No children.

D. Julia Adaline Goff, born 28 September 1963, died 14 February 1940, probably Gallia County, Ohio; married William Sharp. William was born 1854 and died about 15 July 1899, Gallia County, Ohio. William and Julia were the parents of seven children, but only two have descendants.

E. Emily Jane Goff was born 1 April 1869; died 31 December 1910; married Francis Marion Marshall, 29 May 1889, Gallia County, Ohio. Francis was born August 1864; died 4 August 1941. They were the parents of seven children.

F. Andrew J./Archie J. Goff. This person is a bit of a conundrum. Andrew J. Goff was born on 12 April 1870 in Symmes Township, Lawrence, Ohio. However, in 1880, there is no Andrew J. at home with his parents, but instead we find Archie J., born c1871. This Archie was reportedly born on 12 April 1871, not 1870. So, did Andrew die and Archie was born exactly one year later? Or was his named changed to Archie and the year of birth is off slightly? There is a town record for Andrew’s birth, but none for that of Archie, in spite of the fact that Archie’s birth cites FSL film 317727, which I read. I tend to believe this is one person whose name was changed. Archie died 23 February 1953, Springfield, Clark, Ohio and it doesn’t appear that he married or had children so the mystery may be moot. No children.

G. Effie J. Goff, born 27 June 1884; died 11 June 1936; married Harvey E. Caulley, 3 June 1897. Harvey was born 2 June 1871; died 12 August 1939. They were the parents of four children.

H. Flora Alice Goff, born 19 February 1877; died 6 May 1926; married James Callahan Marcum, 31 May 1900. James was born 18 September 1878; died 22 July 1973. They were the parents of five children.

Cynthia was born c1870; died 3 November 1916, Toledo, Lucas, Ohio. (2) Florence P. Brown, born c1888, 15 January 1909, Marion County, Ohio. Archer had one son with Cynthia.

B. Anna Elizabeth Worthington, born about 1 April 1872, Ohio; died 10 November 1923, East Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio; married Charles Fitzer, 29 October 1900, Marion county, Ohio. Charles was born 22 May 1875, Boyd County, Kentucky; died after 12 September 1918, possibly Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio. They were the parents of one daughter.

C. Winnie Estelle Minerva Worthington, born 9 March 1876, Gallia County, Ohio; died 10 August 1967, Geauga County, Ohio; married (1) John H. Little, 4 March 1891. John was born April 1871, Ohio. (2) Grant Olaf Willmore, 21 April 1926, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Grant was born c1881, Ohio. Winnie and John were the parents of five children.
