New Year, New Monthly Research Topics: Andrew Bandy Family – Rebecca Bandy & Descendants of William H. Bandy

Today’s Bandy family update includes two of Andrew and Rebecca (Wooldridge) Bandy’s children because daughter Rebecca needs to be remembered even though she appears to have died young.

Rebecca Bandy was the ninth child and sixth daughter of Andrew and Rebecca Bandy. She was born c1838, Lawrence County, Ohio and appears by name in only the 1850 census when she was 12 years old.

Yes, she could have married between 1850 and 1860, but there is no record of that in Lawrence or surrounding counties in Ohio where the marriage records are intact. Numerous attempts at finding Rebecca after 1850 have been futile and it appears she died young.

William H. Bandy was the ninth child and fourth son of Andrew and Rebecca Bandy. He was born c 1839 and died 6 February 1890, Elliott County, Kentucky.

William married Sarah Elizabeth Howard, 18 May 1866, Gallia County, Ohio. In 1900, Sarah reported on the census that she had given birth to 13 children, but only ten living in 1900. That would match the deaths of James and Sylvester dying in childhood and Lucy dying after giving birth to her first child in 1895.

Piecing together this family was actually quite complicated and required a number of different searches. Next week, I’ll explain how identifying these people wasn’t terribly straight forward.

William and Sarah (Howard) Bandy were the parents of thirteen children:

  1. Mary Alice Bandy, born 22 February 1864, Ohio; died 20 December 1946, Boyd County, Kentucky; married William Henry Pruitt, c 1885. William was born 22 April 1862, Morgan County, Kentucky; died 1 October 1929, Elliott County, Kentucky. They were the parents of eight children.
  2. James A. Bandy, born c1866, Ohio; died between 1880-1900. No further record.
  3. Darinda J. Bandy, born February 1867, Ohio; died 24 February 1934, Elliott County, Kentucky; married Elijah C. Evans, c1888. Elijah was born 9 March 1859, Elliott County, Kentucky; died 18 April 1946, Montgomery County, Ohio. Darinda went by Rinda and some online trees mistakenly call her Miranda. They were the parents of five children.
  4. George H. Bandy, born 25 July 1868, Elliott County, Kentucky; died 26 February 1921, Boyd County, Kentucky; married Elizabeth Fraley, 14 February 1901, Rowan County, Kentucky. They were the parents of five children, with four living in 1910.
  5. John E. Bandy, born 16 August, with years varying between 1859-1875. Because of birth dates of siblings, born c1870 is likely the most accurate. He died 26 March 1940, at the Lima State Hospital Hospital, Bath, Allen, Ohio; married Kansas Atkins, per his death certificate. He died of senile psychoses and congestive heart failureHowever, John is only found in the 1880 census, as a child, and in 1930, living with his sister, Stella Partlow and her husband, in Jackson, Jackson, Ohio. enumerated as single. Unfortunately, he died five days before the 1940 census day of April 1, so he is not found there. It appears he might have been divorced and it is unknown whether or not he had children.
  6. Lucy C. Bandy, born c1872, Elliott County, Kentucky; died c1895, Pike County, Ohio; married Joshua T. Branham, c1894. They were the parents of one son, Ned Gearhart Branham, born 24 August 1895, Pike County, Kentucky. However, in 1900, he was living with the family of Solomon England as an adopted son. Joshua Branham married (2) Sarah Slone, 16 November 1900, Pike County, Kentucky (3) Belle Chapman, 9 February 1924, Lawrence County, Ohio. In 1910, Ned was living with his divorced aunt, Alpha Branham and cousin Louisa, still in Pike County, Kentucky.
  7. Sylvester G. Bandy, born 16 August 1874, Elliott County, Kentucky; died between 1870-1880. No further record.
  8. Abigail Bandy, born 18 November, with her birth year varying between 1875-1878, Elliott County, Kentucky; died 15 June 1966, Kanawha County, West Virginia; married Luther V. Kelly, before 1917. They were the parents of two children.
  9. Wallace Albert Bandy, born December 1880, Elliott County, Kentucky; died 14 May 1941, Marion, Williamson, Illinois; married Dora B. Johnson, 11 September 1904, Barboursville, Cabell, West Virginia. They had no children.
  10. Henderson Bandy, born May 1882, Elliott County, Kentucky; died 13 September 1961, Columbus, Franklin, Ohio; married Minnie Belle Fraley, c1902. Minnie Belle was born 12 April 1880; died 28 May 1949, Elliott County, Kentucky. Henderson had a troubled life and spent many years in prison. More about him in the follow up post detailing the research into the family of his parents. This couple divorced soon, but they had one daughter.
  11. Ada Ollie Bandy, birth year uncertain but perhaps c1883; living in 1919, when she is mentioned in the prison record of her brother, Henderson, and is found in the 1919 city directory of Columbus, Franklin, Ohio; married Unknown Skinner. No further record.
  12. Helen Frances Bandy, born 16 January 1885, Elliott County, Kentucky; died 19 December 1981, West Virginia; married Homer Clyde Jones, 24 December 1906, Boomer, Fayette, West Virginia. Homer was born 3 July 1887, West Virginia; died 1 December 1967, West Virginia. They were the parents of five children.
  13. Stella Bandy, born August 1886, Elliott County, Kentucky; died reportedly in 1953; married Joseph Partlow, 1907, Kanawha County, Ohio. Joseph was born 1878, Ohio; died 30 November 1915, Fayette County, West Virginia. They were the parents of three children.

This concludes what seems to be a straight forward family sketch. However, next week, the follow up post will explain the methodology plus some still elusive details about the family.

There is one more child of Andrew Bandy and Rebecca Wooldridge who first needs to be introduced. Then, I’ll jump back to this family and adds the details to my search methods.
