Alice Vahborg Fuglie Bergholdt: Vintage Postcard Going Home

This simple postcard from the 1915 holiday season is on its way back home, after 108 years!

Alice Vahborg Fuglie was a ten year old girl, excitedly anticipating the Christmas celebration when this postcard was written and mailed.

Alice had very nice cursive for a ten year old young lady:

“Wishing you a Merry Xmas and a happy New Year
From your friend Alice Fuglie, Braham minn”

I think Clara might have been the Clara Helen living with her widowed mother, an older sister and younger brother, in Eureka, Dakota, Minnesota in 1910. That Clara was born c1898, so about 6 years older than Alice.

Braham is a town just north of Minneapolis, while Farmington is a suburb bordering Minneapolis on the south.

Who was Alice and what became of her and her family?

Alice Vahborg Fuglie was the daughter of Mons Anderson Fuglie and Louise Halderson, who married 16 November 1889 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Both were first generation Americans, born to parents who immigrated from Norway.

Alice had many siblings, being one of eight children (seven surviving in 1910) born to Mons and Alice.

Children:

  1. Alfred Hjlmer, born March 1891
  2. Agnes Kristine, born September 1893
  3. Henry Orlando, born June 1896
  4. Myrtle L., born and died 1898
  5. Minnie Lenore, born February 1900
  6. Edwin Lawrence, born 24 April 1902
  7. Alice Vahborg, born 5 June 1904
  8. Milton Lewis, born 4 November 1908

Alice Vahborg Fuglie married Edward Sanford Bergholdt about 1930, most likely in Minnesota, not long before the 1930 census was taken, as they were married by that time and a wedding announcement was in a 1930 newspaper.

Edward’s parents were Swedish and Norwegian so the family was 100% Scandinavian in their ethnic heritage.

Edward, or Sanford as he was known, and Alice were the parents of three children:

  1. Marilyn Louise, born 31 August 1932, Cincinnati, Ohio; died 4 October 2001. She married (1) Maurice E. Dyer, 14 June 1955 in Ohio (2) Possibly Living
  2. Edward Sanford, born 1935, Ohio; died 2009, Altamont, Grundy, Tennessee; married Possibly Living
  3. James Charles, born 1937, Ohio; died 23 June 2009, Oconee County, South Carolina; married Possibly Living

In 1930, as a newlywed, Alice was working as a bookkeeper for a wholesale magazine company. Sanford worked from 1930 into 1950 as a manager for a cosmetics company.

Edward Sanford Bergholdt was born 5 August 1902 and died 10May 1973. Alice survived him by several years, passing away on 31 March 1976. Both are buried at Morrow Cemetery, Morrow, Ohio.

Alice has descendants today and her postcard has been mailed to one of them.

Task accomplished!
