Although Labor Day was initially created to celebrate American workers, today it is seen as the end of summer vacation, with schools heading back into session.
On 7 September 1908, these fashionable ladies and gents were enjoying an outdoor get together in Putnam, Connecticut.
The red penciled note is pretty interesting:
BaseBall
T.A.C. 8 (Trojan A.C.)
Putnam 7
The postcard was mailed to Mrs. J.A. DeRidder (Barbara E.) , 188 Benton St., Hartford, Conn. with this unsigned note:
We played ball right near these circus ground (sic). Big Provid/pleasant time
John Anthony DeRidder worked as a bookkeeper for an insurance company in his day job, but his obituary mentions that he was a sports writer.
I wonder if John mailed off this postcard to Barbara while he was on the road?
John and Barbara were the parents of just one child, a daughter, Marie Claire, born c1908. Although Marie married twice, it appears she had no children, so there are no descendants who might cherish this postcard.
However, it is a fun memento of Labor Day 1908 and the growing popularity of American baseball.
