John Fisher, born c1465 & Christian (MNU), Wingfield, Suffolk, England

Yesterday, I mentioned that The New England Historic Genealogical Register 151:171-191 is an article providing documentary proof of the ancestral origins of Anthony Fisher, who settled in Dedham, Massachusetts by the 1640s.

Today’s family sketch is the first in a series covering all the new information concerning this family. These sketches will only cover the basic information about each generation. For full details and all the source citations, please access the article on AmericanAncestors.org (which is a subscription website).

Not surprisingly, very little is known about John Fisher, given his birth year in the mid-1400s, which predates English church registers.

Because John Fisher left a will, we know the names of his wife and two surviving sons.

John Fisher married Christian (MNU), probably c1488. She predeceased her husband, as she was living in 1514, when she is mentioned in a land deed, but had died before her husband’s passing, which happened before 15 April 1523 in Wingfield, Suffolk, England.

John and Christian (MNU) Fisher were the parents of two known children:

  1. William, born c1490. He inherited Chickering Hall in Wingfield, Suffolk, England. Because Christian is also mention in records regarding Chickering Hall, it is possible that John Fisher came in possession of it through his wife. William is the only Fisher listed in the 1524 Subsidy of Wingfield, so was living at that time. William apparently married because he bequeathed Chickering Hall to his son, John, or to his “next son Robert” if John died without sons.
  2. Robert, born c1495; died between January 1547/48 and January 1563/64; married Unknown (MNU), c1519

This pretty much sums up what is known about John Fisher and his family. The Fisher descendants who settled in Massachusetts are through Robert Fisher, born c1495.

The family sketch of Robert’s family will be posted in a couple of days.
