John C. Allen Allottment of Slaves to Mary I. Allen, Cumberland County, VA in 1848

While transcribing Shadrack Oakley’s estate division the other day, I noticed that the following court record entry also dealt with slaves within an estate.

This record is much shorter, but I wanted to share it, too, in case it helps a descendant out there. 🙂

John C. Allen allottment of Slaves to Mary I. Allen

Agreeable to order of Cumberland County Court at its April term 1848 We the undersigned Commissioners proceed to aprise and allot to Mary I. Stansberry formerly Mary I Allen the following negroes Viz Susina $575- Morgan $575 Catherine $375 Beckey $275 making in the whole amount $1800 out of the Estate of John C. Allen decd and all of which is in strict conforming to the last Will and Testament of John C Allen decd. Given under our hands this 8th day May 1848.

At a Court held for Cumberland County the 22nd day of May 1848. This Report of the allottment of Slaves to Mary I. Allen belonging to the estate of John C. Allen decd was presented in Court and Ordered to lie for exceptions till next Court. and at a Court held for said County the 26th day of June 1848 The same was again presented in Court and no exceptions being filed Thereto Ordered to be recorded.
