This is the second of several funeral cards that belonged to my grandmother, Julia Sabo, that I would like to return to family members.
Catherine Joerger, died 25 December 1948
Catherine Joerger was born about 1862 in Alsace-Lorraine, France. Her husband was Alfred Joerger, born 1861, also in Alsace-Lorraine. Son John, or Jacques, was born about 1885, also in Alsace-Lorraine. John was unmarried in 1940; I remember him living alone in the house a couple of doors away from us on Summer Street.
In 1920, Alfred, Catherine and son John lived at 284 Harrison Street, two streets away from where they are found in 1930 and 1940.
Alfred was a mill hand, while son Jacques/John was a supervisor in the mill. Jacques worked at Botany Worsted Mills and it is likely that his father worked at the same mill.
By 1930, they had bought the house at 57 Summer Street, but Alfred had died, as Catherine was enumerated as a widow.
They were still at 57 Summer Street in 1940, but Jacques was now John.
We moved from Passaic in 1963 and Mr. Joerger, as I knew him, was still living in the house at 57 Summer Street. The S.S. death index shows “Jacques Joerger,” of Passaic dying in 1966.
I have not found the Joerger family in 1900 or 1910, probably because their name was incorrectly indexed so I don’t know if Jacques was an only child. If so, there will be no direct descendants to read this because it appears he never married and had a family.
If you are related to Alfred, Catherine and Jacques/John Joerger who lived at 57 Summer Street, Passaic, NJ or know how to contact someone in this family, please leave a comment so I can return Catherine’s funeral card to them.
