New Year, New Monthly Research Topics: Andrew Bandy Family – Descendants of Andrew Jackson Bandy

Andrew Jackson Bandy was the eighth child and third son of Andrew Bandy and Rebecca Wooldridge.

Andrew was born c1835, Symmes Township. Lawrence Ohio and was called A.J. when young, but went by Jackson as an adult. He married Mary J. Queen, c1868. Mary was born c1850, Ohio and died between 1890 when youngest child Emma was born and the 1900 census when Jackson was enumerated in Beaver, Pike, Ohio.

One comment before this family sketch begins – per the 1850 census, A.J. was 14 years old and listed in the correct chronological order among his siblings, so born c1835. By 1870, his age was only 28, so born 1842, and the same in 1880. In 1900, he had gotten even younger, with his birth reported as March 1850.

Either he didn’t know how old he was, or didn’t want others to know how much older he was than his wife or whoever reported his age in the censuses didn’t really know when he was born and they guessed!

There are also two gravestone markers at Givens Chapel Cemetery, Pike County, Ohio for Jackson and Mary. His is dated 1849-1903 and hers 1851-1903. However, Jackson was widowed by 1900 and I’m not sure the markers were placed in 1903.

The Bandy family several times with children born in Gallia County, Vinton County and Washington County, Ohio and Jackson lived in Pike County in 1900. These counties are all in the bottom southeastern corner of Ohio and the family likely moved for Jackson’s jobs as he worked as a farm laborer.

Andrew Jackson and Mary Jane (Queen) Bandy were the parents of eight children:

  1. Rebecca Martha Bandy, born 7 May 1870, Gallia County, Ohio; died 1959, Ohio. married (1) Ansel Wendle Sherritt, 21 February 1892, Gallia County, Ohio. They apparently divorced, or Martha left, between 1910 and 1920 as he died in 1947, but said he was widowed in the 1940 census when he lived in Gallia County, Ohio. (2) Austin N. Kelley, 15 May 1933, Marion County, Indiana. They were the parents of seven children, with six living in 1910.
  2. Grant Ulysses Bandy, born 7 August 1874, Gallia County, Ohio; died 26 April 1935, Urbana, Champaign, Illinois; married Mahala Margaret Denny, 9 December 1897, Pike County, Ohio. Mahala was previously married to Frank Reisinger, as there are also three Reisinger stepsons at home in 1900. Frank died on 17 October 1896, Pike County, Ohio. They were the parents of six children.
  3. Jane Bandy, born c1875, Ohio; died after 1880. No further record.
  4. Lewis Bandy, born 28 February 1877, Vinton County, Ohio; died 21 May 1969, Montgomery County, Ohio; married Stella Lucas, 22 February 1901, Pike county, Ohio. They were the parents of six children.
  5. Cynthia Bandy, born 2 April 1881, Gallia County, Ohio; married Daniel Sherritt, 12 December 1901, Jackson County, Ohio. No further record of Cynthia or Daniel Sherritt after their marriage.
  6. Lucinda Bandy, born June 1882, Ohio; died after 1900, when she was at home with her father in Pike County, Ohio. No further record.
  7. Edgar Edward Bandy, born 22 August 1889, Washington County, Ohio; died 8 November 1918 of influenza in the pandemic; married Bertha McMann, 10 November 1909, Pike County, Ohio. However, in 1910, 16 year old Bertha Bandy, listed a married, was living with her father, Hezekiah McMann in Pike County, Ohio. Edgar apparently had no children.
  8. Emma Bandy, born 22 September 1890, Ohio; died 22 July 1909, Columbus, Franklin, Ohio. Emma was handicapped and buried in the State of Ohio Feeble Minded Cemetery in Columbus. No children.

There are a couple of children for whom I know little – Jane and Lucinda, but, for the most part, this family sketch is complete.

New Year, New Monthly Research Topics: Andrew Bandy Family – Descendants of Elizabeth Bandy

We’re half way through the descendants of the children of Andrew Bandy and Rebecca Wooldridge. Today, we will look at the life of the seventh child and fifth daughter born to Andrew and Rebecca.

Elizabeth Bandy was born c1833, Symmes Township. Lawrence, Ohio where she grew up. Elizabeth married George Kimble on 18 April 1852, Lawrence County Ohio.

It is somewhat of a challenge to locate records on this family because Kimble has also been spelled Kimball, Kymbol and even Cimble, all for this family.

George Kimble did serve in the Civil War in the Light Artillery of the 5th Independent Battery of Ohio and he received a pension on 9 March 1872.

George was living in Wellston, Jackson, Ohio with his sister Melissa Headen’s family. Although George was listed as married, Elizabeth was not enumerated with them. Melissa was George’s youngest sister and both were children of Solomon Kimble and Mary Yates.

Also at home was his daughter, Fronnie, born October 1875. Given that Fronnie was born in 1875 and female, it makes me wonder if the 1880 census that includes son Frank, born 1875, was an error. There are no further hints for Frank, perhaps she was called Frankie at that time and the census taker assumed she was a son.

Although George is listed as married, his wife wasn’t Elizabeth at the time, it was Susan Ann Fraley, who George married c1891 and who survived him. Elizabeth apparently died by 1891. Susan was notified by the Old Soldiers’ Home that George died on 30 June 1901 in Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio. Susan was living in Boyd County, Kentucky at the time.

George and Elizabeth (Bandy) Kimble were the parents of eleven children:

  1. Joseph Kimble, born c1853, Lawrence County, Ohio; married Elizabeth Rayburn, 12 November 1874, Lawrence County, Ohio. This couple hasn’t been found in 1880.
  2. Mary Jane Kimble, born c1855, Ohio; died after 1870. No further record.
  3. Lewis William Kimble, born 13 March 1857, Lawrence County, Ohio; died 6 May 1944, Deaerborn, Wayne, Michigan; married Mary Betts, 24 December 1879, Jackson County, Ohio. Mary was born 13 April 1863, Ohio; died 13 November 1944, Inkster, Wayne, Michigan. They were the parents of five children, all living in 1900.
  4. Julia Ann Kimble, born September 1859, Lawrence County, Ohio; died after 1880; married Charles Kyser, 30 April 1876, Lawrence County, Ohio. Charles was born c1850, Ohio; died after 1880. They were the parents of at least two children – Alice Elizabeth, born 7 April 1877, Bloomfield, Jackson, Ohio and Charles Henry, born 10 November 1878, Symmes Township, Lawrence, Ohio. However, no one in this family has been found after the 1880 census.
  5. Solomon Kimble, born November 1864, Lawrence County, Ohio; died 23 June 1927, Kanawha County, West Virginia; married Margaret Stephenson, 11 January 1892, Jackson County, Ohio. Margaret was born 29 August 1870, Ohio died 29 January 1913, Jackson County, Ohio. They were the parents of four children, three living in 1900.
  6. Martha Kimble was born about 10 February 1867, Lawrence County, Ohio; died 5 March 1919, Portsmouth, Scioto, Ohio; married Unknown and divorced. It appears she had no children.
  7. William Seymour Kimble, born c1869, Lawrence County, Ohio; died after 1880. No further record.
  8. George W. Kimble, born 29 April 1872, Lawrence County, Ohio; died 9 July 1935, Fayette County, West Virginia; married Annie Edwards, 8 March 1896, Fayette County, West Virginia. Annie was born 6 December 1869; died 4 October 1945. They were the parents of four children, all living in 1920.
  9. Fronnie/Frank Kimble, born c1875, Ohio; died after 1900; living with father George and aunt Melissa Headen’s family in Jackson County, Ohio in 1900. In 1880, this child was enumerated as a son named Frank, born 1875. No further record.
  10. Ella Elizabeth Kimble, born 2 September 1877, Lawrence County, Ohio; died after 1880. No further record.
  11. Rhoda Louise Kimble, born c1879, Lawrence County, Oho; died after 1940; married Robert Luther Ball, 4 September 1916, Bristol, Virginia. Robert was born c1880; died before 1940.

As can be seen in this sketch, there are a number of missing details with children either not found as adults or who married, but their whereabouts afterwards is unknown.

If you are descended from this family and can shed light on any of the mystery children, please leave a comment.

New Year, New Monthly Research Topics: Andrew Bandy Family – Jane Bandy Descendants

Today’s family sketch covers the life of Jane Bandy, the sixth child and fourth daughter of Andrew Bandy and Rebecca Wooldridge, born c1831, Symmes Township, Lawrence, Ohio.

Jane Bandy married Lewis B. Campbell, 6 August 1851, Lawrence County, Ohio.

Lewis was born c1828, Ohio and died on 4 June 1871 in Ironton, Lawrence, Ohio at the young age of 43 years.

Unlike many men of his era, Lewis wasn’t a farmer. There were industries in the Lawrence County area and Lewis worked as a iron moulder in 1860.

He was on the June 1863 list of men subject to military duty for the Civil War and his occupation again was a moulder. However, he apparently did not serve in the war.

The 1870 census is the last in which Lewis appears, still a moulder and living in Upper Township, Lawrence, Ohio, with his wife and children.

Jane (Bandy) Campbell never remarried. She died on 2 April 1894, Ironton, Lawrence, Ohio.

Lewis and Jane were the parents of six children:

  1. Mary Ann Campbell, born c1853; died after 16 October 1876; married (1) Patrick Smith, 14 February 1871. Patrick was born c1839, Canada and appears in the June 1863 list of men eligible for military duty in the Civil War. His occupation was list as puddler, which was a person who converted pig iron into wrought iron with the use of a reverberatory furnace, which was a furnace in which the roof and walls were heated by flames which then radiated heat on to iron in the center of the furnace. Patrick and Mary Ann were the parents of two children, Michael and Mary. However, this family hasn’t been found in the 1880 or any other census. Did Patrick and/or both children died young? (2) Archibald Richardson, 16 September 1875 in Lawrence County, Ohio. They had one son, Charles Newton, born 13 June 1878; died 14 March 1971, Ironton, Lawrence, Ohio.
  2. Martha [Mattie] E. Campbell, born 19 February 1855, Lawrence County, Ohio; died 16 October 1944, Los Angeles County, California; married John Robert Leatart, 14 February 1875, Lawrence County, Ohio. John was born 1849, Virginia; died 14 January 1928, Los Angeles County, California. They were the parents of seven sons.
  3. William L. Campbell, born c1859, Lawrence County, Ohio; died after 1870. No further record.
  4. Sarah Jane Campbell, born March 1961, Lawrence County, Ohio; died 1944, Columbus, Franklin, Ohio; married (1) Albert Minard, 17 Nov 1884, Lawrence County, Ohio. Albert was born c1848; died 1925. (2) Morgan Pritchard, 1 April 1891, Lawrence County, Ohio. Morgan was born c1858, Ohio; died before 1900. (3) William Edgar Root, 21 May 1902, Lawrence County, Ohio. William was born c1861; died 1946. Sarah was the mother of one son, Albert Minard, who later went by Blaine Frederick Pritchard and a son and daughter with Morgan Pritchard.
  5. John B. Campbell, born c1864, Lawrence County, Ohio; died after 1870. No further record.
  6. Katherine Marie Campbell, born 19 May 1867, Lawrence County, Ohio; died 21 August 1933, Lawrence County, Ohio; married John H. Hannon, 23 January 1888, Lawrence County, Ohio. John was born 1859, Ohio; died 1920, Lawrence County, Ohio. They were the parents of three children.

Although neither Lewis nor Jane lived to a very old age, they have a number of descendants today.
