Noah Cresey Greenwood (1811-1894) and Susan Tarbox (1824-1863), Maine

Susan Tarbox was born on 13 June 1824, New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine, the tenth of eleven children born to William Tarbox and Judith Haskell, but the last of the children to have descendants today.

Susan married Noah Cresey Greenwood, 17 June 1845 in New Gloucester. They were the parents of five children, although the two youngest died in childhood and Susan, herself, died on 15 November 1863 in Farmington, Franklin, Maine just three months after the death of her fifth child.

Children:

  1. Louis DeAlvere, born 20 April 1846, probably in Farmington, Franklin, Maine; died 12 October 1885, Portland, Cumberland, Maine; married Bertha Hannah Hall, 10 November 1867, Portland, Cumberland, Maine.

Louis, or his parents, shared a photo of himself with his uncle, George Rogers Tarbox, taken c1870:

Louis and Bertha were the parents of six children, three of whom have descendants:

  1. Ralph Hall, born 10 July 1868, Maine; died 1 October 1935, Maine; married Rachel E. Greeley, 10 February 1887, Maine. They were the parents of one son – Louis DeAlva, born 21 July 1887, Maine; died 16 November 1965, Portland, Cumberland, Maine. Louis married and also had one son and there are descendants today.
  2. Maude Isabelle, born 9 July 1870, Portland, Cumberland, Maine; died 1945; married Malcolm Grant Clark, 26 October 1892, Portland, Cumberland, Maine. They were the parents of one son, Douglas Graeme Clark, born 15 July 1894 in Portland; died 10 March 1961, Bradenton, Manatee, Florida; married Florence Ada Hazen, 5 March 1927, East Greenbush, Rensselaer, New York. They were the parents of three children, two sons and a daughter, and there are descendants today.
  3. Charles Austin, born 27 February 1881, Maine; died 1922, Augusta, Kennebec, Maine; unmarried. Charles has no descendants today.
  4. Louis DeAlvere, born 20 March 1882, Portland, Cumberland, Maine; died 19 July 1882, Portland, Cumberland, Maine. Louis has no descendants.
  5. Josephine May, born 5 November 1883, Portland, Cumberland, Maine; died 17 February 1971, Burlington, Chittenden, Vermont; married Guy Anderson Richardson, c1905. They were the parents of two daughters, Reitha Greenwood, born 17 February 1907; died 9 May 1999, both in Burlington, Chittenden, Vermont; unmarried and Hilda Barstow, born 8 January 1909; died 23 July 1997, both in Burlington, Chittenden, Vermont; married John Jacob Austad, 28 March 1938, Portsmouth, Rockingham, Vermont. John and Hilda have descendants today.
  6. Florence Gray, born 8 April 1885; died 15 April 1885, both in Portland, Cumberland, Maine. Florence has no descendants.

This wraps up the children and grandchildren of William Tarbox and Judith Haskell of New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine. I still find it quite unusual for a New England family for a couple to have eleven children, but only five of whom have descendants and then to have 34 grandchildren, but only 14 of them having descendants, particularly since so many of these people lived to adulthood and married.

Benjamin Franklin Tarbox (1821-1891) and Harriet B. Stetson (1817-1874), Maine

We’re nearing the end of the descendants of William Tarbox and Judith Haskell, as Benjamin Franklin Tarbox was the ninth child and seventh son of this couple. He was born 29 May 1821 in New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine.

As I mentioned in Part 1 of the George Rogers Tarbox family sketch, several Tarbox siblings, including George, Deborah, William and Plummer lived in Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts in the 1840s.

Benjamin was the fifth Tarbox sibling to live in the newly born industrial city and it was there that he married Harriet B. Stetson on 10 April 1847. Whether Benjamin and Hattie knew each other before their time in Lowell isn’t known, but it’s possible they did since his bride was from Minot, only about 15 miles away from New Gloucester.

Benjamin and Harriet were the parents of nine children, but like the life stories of most of the other Tarbox siblings, only two of their children had children of their own.

Children:

  1. Edward A., born c1846, Maine; died 22 October 1919, Augusta, Kennebec, Maine; married Susie G. Morany (possibly Morang), 8 November 1877, Freeport, Cumberland, Maine. They had no children.
  2. Franklin A., born c1848, Maine; died 24 August 1891, Lewiston, Androscoggin, Maine; unmarried.
  3. George Henry, born 25 May 1849, New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine; died 25 April 1920, Malden, MIddlesex, Massachusetts; married Elizabeth Emeline Edward, 1 September 1872, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. They were the parents of three children – Annie Drew, born 3 June 1873, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts; died 16 June 1955, Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts; unmarried, Grace Ethel, born 30 May 1878, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts; died 21 December 1951, Lexington, Middlesex, Massachusetts; married Asahel Blinkworth Blois, 19 September 1904, Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts. They had one son who died at birth. The third child was George William, born 31 July 1881, Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts; died 25 March 1967; married Margaret C. Swain, 19 June 1907, Everett, Middlesex, Massachusetts, but they had no children. George Henry Tarbox has no descendants today.
  4. Amos Tappan, born 22 December 1850, Maine; died June 1851, Maine. Amos has no descendants.
  5. Harriet (Hattie) Maria, born 1 May 1852, Maine; died 6 February 1893; unmarried. Hattie has no descendants today.
  6. Nellie S., born 22 July 1854, New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine; died after 1930, probably Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts; married Peter T. Scott, 1 October 1877, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. Peter and Nellie had one son, Walter, but divorced. Walter changed his surname (noted as by court order) to Tarbox. Walter married and had one daughter, who also married and had a daughter. Nellie has descendants today through that granddaughter.
  7. Olive Roberts, born 14 October 1856, New Gloucester, Maine; died after 1930; married Charles B. Edwards, c1886. They were the parents of one son, Earl F., born 9 October 1888, but who died on 10 July 1902, Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Olive has no descendants today.
  8. Charles Sumner, born 23 April 1859, Lewiston, Androscoggin, Maine; died 1945, Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts; married Amelia Rachel Smith, 7 October 1882, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. They were the parents of three children – Henry Sumner, born 26 April 1883, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts; died after 1920, but never married. Charles Frederick was born 9 June 1884, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts; died 28 October 1954, Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts; married Grace Collins, c1909. They were the parents of two daughters who both married and had children. Their third child, Adeline Rachel was born 3 May 1892, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts; died 28 February 1938, Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts, unmarried.
  9. Minnie J., born c1862, Maine; died 12 September 1884, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts; unmarried.

Benjamin and Hattie have descendants today, although not many, through daughter Nellie and son Charles Sumner Tarbox.

Tomorrow, we’ll look at the life story of William and Judith’s youngest child who married and had children, daughter, Susan Tarbox.

John Hubbard Tarbox & Wives, 1800s, Maine

John Hubbard, as opposed to John Stillman (brother) Tarbox is another child of William Tarbox and Judith Haskell, who suffered the early loss of family members.

John Hubbard Tarbox was born 11 November 1814 in New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine, the sixth child and fourth son of William and Judith.

Like many of is siblings, Hubbard moved away from New Gloucester. He married (1) Lydia Flora Barton, c1842. Lydia was born on 24 March 1819, Hallowell, Kennebec, Maine. and died, possibly in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, before 1857. Hubbard married (2) Diana S. Morse, 25 June 1857, Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

Hubbard and Lydia had three children, while he and Diana were the parents of one son.

Children: (with Lydia)

  1. Flora L., born c1843, Massachusetts; died after 1886, when she is found in the Lawrence, Massachusetts city directory. No death record has been found for her and it’s unlikely she had children if she married after that time, given her birth year. Flora probably has no descendants.
  2. Henrietta, born 11 May 1845, Boston, suffolk, Massachusetts; died 21 September 1847, of dysentery, in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Henrietta has no descendants.
  3. George B.B., born 14 December 1847, Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts; died after 1860. No further record. George may or may not have descendants today.

Child: (with Diana)

  1. John Henry, born 23 August 1858, Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts; died 1929, Androscoggin County, Maine; married Mary J. Frazier, c1885, probably in Maine.

This family’s story gets a big curious at this point. Diana Sadly died on 11 April 1862 in Cambridge.

I suspect that Hubbard might have sent John Henry to relatives who could care for him.

In any case, Hubbard enlisted in the 12th Massachusetts Battery on 16 August 1864 and was discharged on 25 July 1865. He died on 12 March 1888 at the National Disabled Soldiers Home in Togus, Kennebec, Maine.

I mentioned this situation being curious because one George B. Tarbox enlisted for Civil War duty on 19 September 1864 (Hubbard’s son would have been a few months short of his 17th birthday if this is him) and was mustered out on 25 July 1865, the exact same day at John Hubbard Tarbox.

It’s possible that George not only lied about his age, but gave an alias if this soldier is our George. His military record states he was a laborer living in East Cambridge, Massachusetts. He served with the 12th Light Artillery, which is also known as the 12th Massachusetts Battery. However, Ancestry gives an alias of John Armstrong attached to this record.

Did George sneak off to become a soldier, but being underage caused him to use an alias, and did his 50 year old father enlist to find him? It’s an interesting situation.

What then became of little John Henry Tarbox? John and his wife, Mary Frazier, settled in Androscoggin County, Maine and became the parents of four children.

Children:

  1. Harold B., born 1886; died 1902, probably both in Androscoggin County, Maine. Harold has no descendants.
  2. Frank P., born 9 June 1888, Lewiston, Androscoggin, Maine; died 18 September 1922, Waterville, Kennebec, Maine; married Ida Belle Adams, 7 June 1914, Waterville, Kennebec, Maine. They were the parents of one son, Franklin Phillip, born 30 July 1918, Waterville, Kennebec, Maine; died 19 January 1988, Brewer, Penobscot, Maine. Franklin never married. Frank has no descendants today.
  3. Olive Gertrude, born 1893; died 25 December 1969; unmarried. Olive has no descendants today.
  4. Robert Roy, born March 1898, Androscoggin County, Maine; died 1969; married Evelyn Gladys Thompson, 29 November 1923, Lewiston, Androscoggin, Maine. They had one son, Harold Roy, born 15 January 1927, Lewiston, Androscoggin, Maine; died 11 December 1996, also in Lewiston. He married Denise Mary Savard, 28 October 1955 in Maine, but they divorced. Denise married again in 1954 and 1981 and died in 2013 in Maine. It appears that Harold and Denise had no children, as his 1996 obituary mentions no children. Robert has no descendants today.

Given these facts, John Hubbard Tarbox has no descendants today.
