Robert Lockwood, England to Massachusetts by 1633

This is part of a series about my New England colonial ancestors who arrived by during the Great Migration. If you have early Massachusetts ancestry, be sure to check out AmericanAncestors, as the Great Migration Study Project can be viewed there with a membership to the New England Historic Genealogical Society.

Robert Lockwood’s English origins have been proven to be Combs, Suffolk, England. He was born c1600, but no birth or baptismal records have thus far been discovered. Therefore, the names of his purported parents are not being included in this family sketch.

Robert did have a brother, Edmund Lockwood, who sailed in the Winthrop Fleet of 1630 to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Robert is known to have been in Massachusetts by 1633, but it is possible that he sailed with his brother.

Robert Lockwood married Susannah Norman, daughter of Captain Richard Norman of Salem, who arrived in 1626. They likely married in Salem, c1633 and are two of my 9X great grandparents.

The Lockwoods lived in at least three places during their lives in the American colonies, documented by three events. First, Robert was made a freeman of Massachusetts Bay on 9 March 1636/37. Next, he settled in Stamford, Connecticut, living there from 1646 until 1650, at which time he sold his land holdings. Last, Robert Lockwood settled in Fairfield County, Connecticut and was made a freeman there on 20 March 1652.

He lived only a few years more, dying intestate before 11 September 1658. At that time, his widow Susannah was appointed administratix of his estate. She soon married (2) Jeffery Ferris.

Robert and Susannah were the parents of eleven children, with ten surviving to adulthood.
