John Adams, Loyalist, CT & New Brunswick, Canada: Generation 5 – 2X Great Grandchildren, Part 4

NOTE: First and foremost, this is still a work in progress. It’s been at least 20 years since I did a major revision on this family. Many records have been found in that time that tidy up a lot of dates and places, many of which came from family records.

The descendants are listed in ahnentafel order (in birth order of the children of John and Sarah.)

If you are a descendant of John Adams and Sarah Coley and can fill in any more of the question marks, please leave a comment.

These are the known 2X great grandchildren of Loyalists John and Sarah (Coley) Adams through their son Daniel.

Stephen Brawn Adams (Frederick3, Sturges2, John1) was born September 1830; died 1 October 1918; married Sarah J. Singer, 31 December 1854, Eastport, Washington, Maine. He was from Deer Island and Sarah was from Eastport. Sarah was born January 1834, Nova Scotia, Canada. The family lived at 3 Franklin St., Eastport in 1910.43 This family hasn’t been found in 1860 or 1870 in the U.S. or in 1861 or 1871 in Canada. It is likely that Sarah Singer Adams died before January  1880 and that Sarah in the 1880 census is a second wife. She is 35 years old and probably too young to be the mother of 23 year old Florence.

Children of Stephen Brawn and Sarah J. (Singer) Adams:

  1. Florence Cecilia, born 10 September 1857, probably Eastport, Washington, Maine; died 24 August 1939, Washington County, Maine; married (1) George Sumner Farris, 2 December 1888, Eastport, Washington, Maine (2) Edwin Stevenson, 23 December 1900, Eastport, Washington, Maine. George died 10 April 1897, Eastport, Washington, Maine.
  2. Stephen Brawn, born January 1880, Maine: he is enumerated as an adopted son in 1900, living at home. However, mother Sarah reported that she had given birth to two children, both still living. It is unknown if Stephen was included as one of her two children.

Mary Jane Adams (Frederick3, Sturges2, John1) was born 1832, New Brunswick, Canada; died after 1900; married Philip Sullivan, 7 December 1858, New Brunswick, Canada.35 This family moved to Worcester, Massachusetts in 1895 and appear in the 1900 census there. They have not been found after 1900. It appears Philip may have had a first marriage because the 1861 census includes Philip and Mary Jane, plus children Ella, age 8, and John, aged 6. Both of these children are gone in 1871. In 1900, Mary Jane reported that she had given birth to six children, four surviving. None of the children were living with Philip and Mary Jane in 1900.

Children of Philip and Mary Jane (Adams) Sullivan:

Stergis Alford Adams (Frederick3, Sturges2, John1) was born 28 May 1834; died 16 June 1880, Deer Island, Charlotte, New Brunswick, Canada; married Harriet M. Adams, his first cousin, 27 August 1858, Eastport, Washington, Maine. Both were of Deer Island, New Brunswick, Canada.  She was born 13 November 1842; died 4 September 1906, probably at Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada. He went by Alfred.35 Harriet married (2) Simondson Outhouse, 5 May 1887, Tiverton, Digby, Nova Scotia. She lived in Tiverton in 1891, but was at Campobello Island in 1901. She was from Deer Island, born 15 September 1845; died about 17 March 1923, Brooklyn, New York. Alonzo is buried at Maple Grove Cemetery, Richmond Hill, New York. His obituary appeared in the Boston Post, but he was a resident of East Hampton, NY when he died. Boston death certificate is numbered #500, dated 1913. Fayette Smith McKinley said Alonzo and Josephine were married very early in the morning, went aboard the Wallace and sailed to the Orient. In 1913, one son lived on an East Hampton farm and the other was a dentist in Brooklyn, New York. Wallace’s birth may be registered in Washington, DC, as he was born under the U.S. flag abroad.
