Descendants of William Alexander Williams & Hepsabeth Davidson, VA, TN & AR: Part 6, Mary Elizabeth Williams

Today, we’ll look at the family of Mary Elizabeth Williams, the eighth child born to William and Hepsabeth Williams.

We’ve already mentioned that Child #4, Christopher C.F. Williams, the twin of Sally Anderson Williams, died when he was three years old.

Child #7, born just before Mary Elizabeth Williams, was John Alexander Williams, born 10 January 1844 and died on 1 March 1847.

Therefore, Mary Elizabeth, born 23 February 1847 in Lafayette County, Arkansas, was the sixth surviving child of William and Hepsabeth and her parents had already been settled in Lafayette County for about four years when she was born.

Mary Elizabeth married Robert Cosby McClellan, who often went by Cosby, c1868. They had a large family of ten children, but only four married and had children of their own.

All events took place in Hempstead County unless otherwise noted.

Children: (McClellan)

  1. Frances A., born November 1869; died after 1900; apparently never married or had children
  2. Martha Jane, born about January 1874; died 10 June 1963, Hempstead County, Arkansas; married Tap A. Adams, 20 January 1895, Lafayette County, Arkansas. However, Tap died between 1900-1910 and they had only one surviving child, Izora Mae, born 3 February 1904, Lafayette County, Arkansas; died 3 January 1975 and married Henry Calvin Townsend, 18 December 1895.
  3. Margaret Parilee, born c1875; died after 1940; unmarried
  4. James Thomas, born about 8 January 1876; died 15 July 1942; married Melissa A. Archer, 30 September 1896. However, Melissa died before 1900 and they apparently had no surviving children. James never remarried.
  5. Julia Esther, born 22 August 1876; died 8 August 1964, Caddo parish, Louisiana; married Francis Edgar Gilley, 20 January 1895, Lafayette County, Arkansas
  6. Burton, born September 1879; died before 1900; unmarried
  7. Leona Roberta, born 14 August 1880; died 12 April 1962; married Thomas Newton Turnipseed, 10 July 1927, Lafayette County, Arkansas when she was 46 years old. She had no children of her own.
  8. George Felix, born August 1882; died 12 July 1967; married Cornelia Odessa Barham, about 29 April 1905, Lafayette County, Arkansas
  9. William Lee, born 20 September 1884; died 25 February 1954, Pine Bluff, Jefferson, Arkansas; married Cornelia McClellan, 31 December 1902, Texarkana, Bowie, Texas
  10. Walter G., born July 1886; died between 1900-1910

Robert Cosby McClellan died on 15 May 1909, Lafayette County, Arkansas. Mary survived him by many years, dying on 23 July 1932 in Patmos, Hempstead, Arkansas.

Descendants of William Alexander Williams & Hepsabeth Davidson, VA, TN & AR: Part 5, Martha Jane Williams

Martha Jane Williams was the sixth child of William and Hepsabeth Williams, born on 14 December 1840 in Marion County, Tennessee.

It’s not likely that she had any memories of life in Tennessee as she was wasn’t even three years old when they left for Lafayette County, Arkansas.

Martha had a difficult life because of the Civil War.

Martha married (1) Jackson T. Lackey, born c1826 in Arkansas, on 31 August 1858 in Lafayette County, Arkansas.

Jackson may well have died because of Civil War activities as he was living on 13 June 1860 when the census taker came around, but died before 17 March 1861 when Martha Lackey married (2) John Forrest, Bradley County, Arkansas, which is several counties directly east of Lafayette County.

Jackson and Martha had one known child.

Child: (Lackey)

  1. James A., born March 1859, Arkansas; died 18 April 1935, Lafayette County, Arkansas; married Martha E. Ricketts, 23 February 1881, Ouachita County, Arkansas.

Interestingly, given previous Williams family members living in Tyler, Smith, Texas, that is exactly where James Lackey lived in 1900 with his wife, Martha, his mother Martha Forrest, and his cousin Ida E. Jones, all living with him.

Martha, in 1900, reported on the census that she had given birth to eight children, but only two were living.

However, she gave birth to at least six children with John Forrest, who died before 1880.

The Forrest children were probably all born in Nevada County, Arkansas. Since typhoid fever was going around in 1875, it’s possible that one or more of the Forrest children died from it.

Children: (Forrest)

  1. Jeachey, born c1860; died before 1900
  2. Calvin, born c1864; died before 1900
  3. Jackson, born c1866; died before 1900
  4. George, born c1868; died between 1870-1900
  5. Martha, born c1868; died between 1884-1891; married James Alexander Plumley, 21 August 1884, Nevada County, Arkansas
  6. David Wilson, born 6 April 1870; died 7 May 1941, Sabine Parish, Louisiana; married Mae Walker, c1925
  7. John, born c1873; died between 1880-1900. He may be the John Forrest who married Cora Ashford, 13 August 1895, Smith County, Texas.

Martha Jane (Williams) (Lackey) Forrest died on 22 June 1918 and is buried in Lafayette County, Arkansas.

Descendants of William Alexander Williams & Hepsabeth Davidson, VA, TN & AR: Part 4, Sally Anderson Williams

The story of Sally Anderson Williams is, unfortunately, another rather short one.

Sally was born on 27 November 1839 in Marion County, Tennessee and was barely more than a toddler when her family removed to Lafayette County, Arkansas.

She was the fifth born, but fourth surviving child of William and Hepsabeth Williams as her twin brother, Christopher C.F. Williams, died on 5 October 1842, just a few weeks away from his third birthday.

Sally married Elijah Pridgen Jones, who was born c1838 in Alabama, on 22 March 1856 in Lafayette County, Arkansas.

Elijah and Sally and their children all survived the Civil War, but the parents didn’t live to old age.

Children: (Jones)

  1. John B., born c1857; died c1875
  2. James G., born c1858; died after 1883: possibly the man who married Julia Nelson, 4 November 1883, Nevada County, Arkansas. They haven’t been found after their marriage, but age on the marriage record fits this James.
  3. Sarah Jane Annabelle, born 1 March 1863, Hempstead County, Arkansas; died 2 November 1842, Hempstead County, Arkansas; married Cyrus Cicero McClellan, 27 November 1881, Hempstead County, Arkansas
  4. Walter Pridgen, born 12 October 1866; died 16 March 1945, Lafayette County, Arkansas; married Mary Janetta Cook, 2 January 1887, Lafayette County, Arkansas

Sally Anderson (Williams) Jones died on 20 November 1867, Hempstead County, Arkansas.

Elijah married (2) A. Frances Coleman, 19 June 1870, Hempstead County, Arkansas. She was born c1837.

However, I have been unable to find what became of Frances and no children have been found from this marriage.

Elijah reportedly died in 1875 in Hempstead County, but his grave photo only shows a rock marking the spot where he was supposedly buried. It is thought he might have died of a typhoid fever outbreak along with his son, John, and father David Jones.

It is not known whether James and Julia Jones have descendants today, but Walter and Sarah both married and had children.
