UPDATE: Elijah Brasher & Sarah Long, Christian County, KY

Elijah Brasher was the son of Lawrence Brasher and Elizabeth Black, born between 1807 and 1816 in South Carolina, depending on which census is read. Given that he married only once, in 1846, I tend to believe 1816 is more accurate. It’s also the birth year in the 1850 census.

Elijah Brasher married Sarah (Sallie) Long on 8 July 1846 in Christian County, Kentucky.

They were the parents of six children, although only three married.

Elijah died in Christian County on 25 July 1873. Sallie survivedher husband by many years, dying on 23 May 1894, also in Christian County, Kentucky.

All events below were in Christian County, Kentucky.

UPDATE: Charles P. Armstrong & Mary Brasher, Christian County, KY

Mary Brasher, born c1802, South Carolina, was the fifth children and third daughter of Lawrence Brasher and Elizabeth Black.

Mary was about 18 years old when she married Charles P. Armstrong, born c1799, also reportedly in South Carolina, on 19 February 1820.

They married and settled down in Christian County, Kentucky.

Not much is known about Charles in terms of his occupation or daily life because he died in June 1842 (date states in a court record), leaving a wife, a married daughter and at least six minor children.

Edward Wooldridge, who married Mary’s sister Margaret Brasher, took on the double responsibility of the estate administration and accepting guardianship of six or seven minor children [to be explained.]

Mary was living for the 1850 census, but apparently died before 1860 as she is not found in any later records. There is no estate administration in her name.

The 1830 and 1840 censuses help identify the number of children born to Charles and Mary, assuming that all children in the home are theirs, which seems to be the case.

Children: (Armstrong)

  1. Elizabeth, born c1821, Alabama; died after 1860; married Hezekiah Brewer, 15 September 1840, Christian County, Kentucky
  2. Daughter, born c1823; died after 1840. She isn’t named as a minor child in 1842, but no marriage record has been found either. It is unknown whether she died unmarried or if she married outside of Christian County, Kentucky. No further information.
  3. Lawrence T., born 23 April 1825, probably Lawrence County, Alabama; died 14 August 1894, Christian County, Kentucky; married Catherine Long, 10 January 1850, Christian County, Kentucky
  4. James W., born c1827; died after 1842 when he was named as a minor heir of Charles, but not found in 1850.
  5. Elliott J., born March 1829, Kentucky; died after 1900, possibly in Webster County, Kentucky where he was living; married Lavinia Sellers, 22 October 1855, Union county, Kentucky
  6. Daughter, born c1831. She was living in 1840, but not named as a minor heir in 1842 so died young.
  7. Mary J., born c1834, Christian County, Kentucky; died after 1860; married Joseph Cook, 27 July 1851, Christian County, Kentucky
  8. George H., born c1837, Christian County, Kentucky; died before 21 September 1867, Christian County, Kentucky when his estate appraisers were appointed by the court; apparently unmarried.
  9. Margaret J., born c1842, Christian County, Kentucky; died before 10 December 1873, Christian County, Kentucky, when her brother Lawrence was appointed her estate administrator; married John J. Matheny, 24 January 1857, Christian County, Kentucky.

Here ends the biographical sketch of the family of Charles P. and Mary (Brasher) Armstrong.

William T. Brasher & Nancy J. Thompson, KY to MO

William T. Brasher as the fourth child and second son of Lawrence Brasher and Elizabeth Black.

William was born c1806 in South Carolina and moved as a child to Christian County, Missouri.

Unfortunately, the life story of this family isn’t terribly long as William and Nancy were relatively young when they died.

William Brasher married Nancy J. Thompson on 18 October 1830, Hopkins County, Kentucky.

By 1849, William registered a land grant in Maries County, Missouri and the family was enumerated in Jackson, Osage County, Missouri in 1850.

Sadly, this was the last census in which William appears as he died on 11 October 1859 and is buried in Maries County, Missouri.

Nancy died on 23 April 1872 at the age of 57 years in Maries County.

This family often went by the Brasier spelling in Missouri.

Children: (Brasher)

  1. John Riley, born 31 October 1831, Kentucky; died 2 December 1907, Claremore, Rogers, Oklahoma; married Amanda Jane Blanton, 2 June 1853, Osage County, Missouri
  2. Greenville M., born 17 November 1833, Kentucky; 18 February 1879, Maries County, Missouri; married Caroline Blanton, 28 July 1853, Osage County, Missouri
  3. Mary Jane, born 9 February 1835, Kentucky; died 23 February 1869, Vernon County, Missouri; married Martin Copeland, 19 November 1854, Osage County, Missouri
  4. James J., born 16 January 1836, Kentucky; died 14 November 1864, Maries County, Missouri; married Rebecca Copeland, c1856.
  5. Sherrill Tisdel, born 29 April 1840, Missouri; died 1 February 1919, Vernon County, Missouri; married Elizabeth Copeland, c1861
  6. Nancy Peggy T., born 20 October 1842, Missouri; died 26 May 1918, Newton County, Missouri; married George G. Barnhart, 5 November 1870, Osage County, Missouri

Although William and Nancy both died at young ages, their children married and had families so they have a number of descendants today.
