The second child of Lawrence Brasher and Elizabeth Black was Nancy Brasher, born on 22 September 1795 in South Carolina and died on 9 September 1873 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.
Dates are from her gravestone, which is flat on the ground, but intact and legible at Christian Privilege Cemetery, Hopkins County, Kentucky.
Nancy Brasher married James Hamby on 2 August 1813 in Christian County, Kentucky, which borders Hopkins County.
James Hamby was born c1793, also in South Carolina and reportedly died a few months before Nancy on 15 April 1873.
However, his gravestone has no photo available and his Find A Grave entry has numerous errors, proved by census records. It also calls him James Jesse, but NO primary record so far found has ever called him anything except JAMES Hamby.
James and Nancy settled into married life in Christian County, Kentucky, where they were enumerated in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 censuses. Some time before 1850, they settled in Hopkins County, where they lived out their lives. James Hamby sold land in Christian County in 1842 to his son-in-law, Madison Hamby and it’s likely that is when the family moved.
However, it seems no one has been able to fully document the Hamby children. Based on census records, James and Nancy had at least nine children, but only six have been identified.
Children:
- Daughter, born c1815; died after 1830
- Malinda, born 15 September 1817, Kentucky; died 18 October 1883; married Thomas Crabtree, 21 January 1841, Christian County, Kentucky
- Daughter, born c1819; died after 1830
- Charlotte, born 5 December 1821, Christian County ,Kentucky; died 15 September 1875, Madisonville, Hopkins, Kentucky; married Madison Hamby, 8 September 1842, Christian County, Kentucky
- Daughter, born c1823; died after 1840
- Elizabeth, born c1825, Kentucky; died after 1870; married Elias Oldham, 23 March 1854, Hopkins County, Kentucky
- Willis Hickman, born 12 March 1829, Kentucky; died 12 December 1882, Kentucky; married Nancy Edwards, 12 August 1852, Hopkins County, Kentucky
- Artimesia Jane, born c1833, Kentucky; died after 1880; married Ingram W. Jackson, 9 September 1852, Hopkins County, Kentucky
There is also a male at home in 1840, born 1821-1825, but he is not in the home in 1830 so this might be some other relative.
It seems the first three daughters would be getting married in the 1830s, but there are only about three Hamby females marrying in Kentucky during that decade and a further search from 1840-1850 found the marriage record for one Malinda Hamby to Thomas Crabtree in Christian County. She is attributed as a child of James and Nancy.
What became of the other two daughters born before 1820 and the one born c1823 is not known. It’s possible they all died young, but they are not found apart from the pre-1850 censuses.
