When I came across this photo of Addie Hossle, I knew it wasn’t unique because her Find-a-Grave memorial includes the image. However, this picture is in excellent condition and I was able to locate several descendants of Addie.

What was I able to learn about Addie and her family?
Addie Frances Hossle was born on 4 July 1867 in LeClaire, Scott, Iowa, the daughter of Alexander and Frances Hossle. Both of her parents were born in Switzerland. A modern cemetery memorial identifies Alexander’s birth date as 26 February 1826 and birthplace as Bezirk Laufenburg, Aargau, Switzerland. Wife Franciska Fridolina Hossle was born 9 March 1827 in the same town. However, the memorial makes it appear like her maiden name was also Hossle, which probably isn’t accurate since no parents’ names are given.
From the memorial: Alexander Hossle was born in Herznach, Aargau, Switzerland on February 26, 1826. He and his family were Catholic. He Immigrated to New York from Switzerland on November 7, 1854 by way of Le Harve, France. He and his wife Franciska were married in Switzerland September 15, 1852, before coming to America. The family moved from New York to Perry County, Indiana, Mississippi, Louisville, Kentucky, back to Indiana and then to Le Clare, Iowa. Alexander was a farmer.
He died September 2, 1906 in Red Oak, Montgomery County, Iowa and is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, Montgomery County, Iowa.
Children of Alexander and Frances Hossle:
- John, born c1856, Indiana; died 30 April 1934, Emerson, Mills, Iowa; married Eliza Trumbaur, 6 November 1883
- Caroline, born c1858, Iowa; perhaps died young as she is not at home in 1870, but is there in 1860
- Frederick William, born 1 May 1860, LeClaire, Scott, Iowa; died 28 February 1923, Red Oak, Montgomery, Iowa; married Mary Heckel, 10 September 1885, Red Oak, Montgomery, Iowa
- Louisa/Lucy, born c1863, Scott County, Iowa; died 10 April 1939, Red Oak, Montgomery, Iowa; married Nicholas Yager, 18 November 1882, Red Oak, Montgomery, Iowa
- Addie Frances, born 4 July 1867, LeClaire, Scott, Iowa; died 13 April 1942, Red Oak, Montgomery, Iowa; married Emory Arthur Taylor, 20 August 1890, Montgomery County, Iowa
A couple of other children are linked to this family, but the 1900 census includes the information that Frances gave birth to four children and all are living. Also, the other two children, who lived to adulthood but who won’t be named here, never appear in the census records with this family.
Emory and Addie (Hossle) were the parents of:
- Louie A., born 2 December 1890, Iowa; died 9 November 1924, Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa; married Una (MNU), who died in 1921. It appears that Louie and Una had no children.
- Louise Marie, born 27 October 1910, Red Oak, Montgomery, Iowa; died 10 April 2007, Red Oak, Montgomery, Iowa; married Ralph H. Herron, 1932.
Ralph and Louise (Taylor) Herron were the parents of one son and two daughters, two of whom are still living.
This photo of Addie has gone home to a great grandchild, who I hope will cherish it.
