I had every intention of writing a full life sketch for George Rogers Tarbox, my 3X great grandfather from New Gloucester and Calais, Maine.
However, when reviewing the facts I had collected about his parents and siblings, I realized I still had some work to do.
I’d written about William Tarbox in 2022 and the sad end to his life, but apparently haven’t ever covered William’s and Judith’s lives in detail.
William Tarbox was born on 21 March 1779, New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine and died on 22 May 1860, in Augusta, Kennebec, Maine at the state hospital.
William married Judith Haskell, born 1781, New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine on 25 November 1802, also in New Gloucester. She was the daughter of Nathan Haskell and Judith Witham.
Although they were the parents of eleven children who lived to adulthood, one never married and four others had no children. Of those who had children, several were lost in childhood, meaning that there are relatively few descendants today given all the children they had.
Children: (All born in New Gloucester)
- Hannah Dennison, born 23 December 1803; died 25 February 1891, New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine; unmarried
- Joseph Sayward, born 18 March 1807; died 16 February 1892, Newe Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine; married Jane Wilborn/Wilbour, 28 July 1832, Durham, Androscoggin, Maine. Jane was born in England and died c1880. Joseph and Jane have many descendants through one daughter.

- William, born 4 February 1813; died 25 December 1898, Farmington, Franklin, Maine; married (1) Mary Ann Currier, 4 May 1843, Farmington, Franklin, Maine (2) Julia S. - John Hubbard, born 11 November 1814; died 12 March 1888, Togus, Kennebec, Maine; married (1) Lydia Flora Barton, c1837 (2) Diana S. Morse, 25 June 1857, Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts. He had three children with Lydia, none of whom have descendants and one son with Diana. However, that son had only one son who never married. Therefore, John Hubbard Tarbox has no descendants today.

- Benjamin Franklin, born 29 May 1821; did 6 June 1891, Lewiston, Androscoggin, Maine; married Harriet D. Stetson, 10 September 1847, Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts. They were the parents of nine children, but only one (or possibly two) of those children have descendants today.
- Susan, born 13 June 1824; died 15 November 1863, Farmington, Franklin, Maine; married Noah Cresey Greenwood, 17 June 1845, New Gloucester, Cumberland, Maine. Noah and Susan have descendants today.
- Plummer Chase, born 25 March 1827; died 25 March 1895, Derby, Orleans, Vermont; married Sarah A. Ward, 30 January 1848, Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts. They had no children.
Coming up on Monday will be the first of the series of family sketches of William and Judith’s children who married and had children – Joseph Sayward, William, John Hubbard, George Rogers, Benjamin Franklin and Susan. Many of their children had difficult lives.
