Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: Did Your Grandparents Know Their Grandparents?

Hope everyone is enjoying the Independence Day weekend. It’s time for Randy Seaver’s weekly challenge on Saturday Night Genealogy Fun:

1)  Did your grandparents know their grandparents personally?

2)  Check your family tree, and share your grandparents names, birth and death years and places, and their grandparents names, birth and death year and places, and indicate if they knew their grandparents.

  1. Paternal Grandfather – George Kucharik aka Sabo (1893 PA to 1936 NJ). His grandparents were: John Kucharik, Maria Repka, Michael Kacsenyak and Anna Haluska. NO to 4. George never met any of his grandparents as he was born in Delano, Pennsylvania and none of his grandparents ever left today’s Slovakia.
  2. Paternal Grandmother – Julia Scerbak (1893 NJ to 1985 NJ). Her grandparents were John Scerbak, Maria Patorai, John Murcko and Maria Szova. YES to 4. Julia knew all of her grandparents personally because her parents took the family back to Udol, Slovakia in 1896 and Nana grew up there.
  3. Maternal Grandfather – Vernon Tarbox Adams (1899 ME to 1968 MA). His grandparents were Calvin Segee Adams, Nellie Tarbox, Charles Stewart and Elida Ann Hicks. YES to 3. Vernon personally knew three of his four grandparents – Calvin, Nellie and Elida. NO to 1. He never knew Charles Stewart as Charles died in 1894, five years before Vernon was born.
  4. Maternal Grandmother – Hazel Ethel Coleman (1901 ME to 1995 MA). Her grandparents were William Coleman, Sarah Moriah Crouse, Frits Wille Oscar Jensen/Johnson and Margrethe Bruun. YES to 3. Hazel knew William, Sarah and Frits, who all lived nearby. NO to 1. She never knew Margrethe, who died 11 years before Hazel was born.

Totals:

YES – 10
NO – 6

I cheated a bit, omitting some of the years and my totals would have been very different if my paternal grandfather had been born in Slovakia before the family emigrated.

Thanks, Randy, for this week’s challenge.

  1. The whole chance of knowing one’s grandparents is living nearby and being born before they died. I loved how you wrote this up.
