Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: Be a Time Traveler

As April comes to a close, we have the final Saturday Night Genealogy Fun challenge for this month from Randy Seaver:

1)  We all wish that we knew more about our most elusive ancestors – the ones we might not know the surname for, or the one who was probably adopted, changed his name for some reason, or lived through war or a natural disaster.

2)  Be a time traveler – where would you go, who would you speak with, what would you ask them?

I’m very late with my post today as we’ve had all kinds of house updates happening this weekend. It’s been very busy around here!

However, If I could travel back in time, I’d visit 1785 in the newly created province of New Brunswick in what became the Dominion of Canada.

It really, really bugs me that the origins of my Loyalist ancestors Robert Carlisle and his wife, Catherine (MNU), remain behind a very solid brick wall.

Here are my questions for Robert:

  1. When and where were you born?
  2. Who were your parents? What do you know about your aunts, uncles and cousins?
  3. Did you know your grandparents? If so, do you know when and where they were born and his occupation?
  4. Although called a Loyalist, I have no evidence you ever lived in the colonies before the American Revolution. Did you live there?
  5. Did you have strong feelings about supporting the King during the war?
  6. Why did you decide to move to Maine c1830?
  7. Did you always work as an inn keeper?

Catherine’s questions:

  1. When and where were you born?
  2. Who were your parents? What do you know about your aunts, uncles and cousins?
  3. Did you know your grandparents? If so, do you know when and where they were born and his occupation?
  4. What day did you get married and was it in Parrtown?
  5. What were the names and birth dates of all your children?
  6. Did you only have seven – Robert, Daniel, John, James, Abigail, Catherine and Mary? Were the others who died young or who haven’t been placed in your family because of lack of documentation?

That’s it for me. Basic questions, but answers would tell me a lot more than I know about Robert and Catherine (MNU) Carlisle!

Thank you, Randy, for this week’s challenge.

  1. Glad to see a post instead of an empty one I saw this morning. You have great questions. The question about being a loyalist is an interesting one.
