New Year, New Monthly Research Topics: Andrew Bandy Family – Descendants of Samuel Coleman Bandy

Today’s family sketch will cover the children and grandchildren of Samuel Coleman Bandy and wife Sidney Nelson.

Samuel Coleman Bandy was the son of Andrew Bandy and Rebecca Wooldridge, born 25 December, either in 1816 or 1818, and likely in Botetourt County, Virginia where the family lived before migrating westward to Ohio.

Here’s a quick review of the Bandy lineage:

Richard Bandy married Jane (MN)
John Bandy married Lucy (probably Christian)
Andrew Bandy married Rebecca Wooldridge
Samuel Coleman Bandy married Sidney Nelson

Each generation of the Bandys lived in Botetourt County, Virginia after Richard Bandy emigrated from England to the colonies.

It was unusual for families to give middle names to children in the early 1800s when Samuel was born. In this case, it is easy to determine why he was given that name. Rebecca Wooldridge was the daughter of James Wooldridge and Ann (Nancy) Coleman. Ann, in turn, was the daughter of Samuel Coleman and Ann Wright. Rebecca also had a brother named Samuel Coleman Wooldridge. Her grandfather died when Rebecca was only four years old. Her brother was obviously named to honor his grandfather and Rebecca may have chosen to honor either her grandfather or brother or both of them.

Sidney Nelson had previously been married to a Hobble, reportedly William, and left her with three young children – two sons, Benjamin and Isaiah, and two daughters, Lucretia and Jane. If William was her husband, I question whether he died or they divorced as one William Hobble, aged 50, is living in Symmes Township, Lawrence, Ohio in 1850 and he married Elizabeth Windle there on 26 June 1839. In any case, Samuel was Sidney’s second husband.

Samuel married Sidney (Nelson) Hobble on 6 August 1840, Gallia County, Ohio. Their blended family is found living in Peoria, Illinois in 1850.

Samuel and Sidney (Nelson) Bandy were the parents of six children:

  1. Delphena Jane Bandy, born c1838, Ohio; died 25 February 1918, Kankakee, Kankakee, Illinois; married Peter Wolgamott, 29 August 1861, Peoria County, Illinois. Peter was born c1841, Indiana and died on 22 June 1864 in the battle at Kennesaw Mountain, Cobb, Georgia during the Civil War. Delphena reported in 1900 that she had given birth to two children, but neither were living and she never remarried, so she has no descendants today. No children.
  2. George W. Bandy, born 31 January 1842, Peoria County, Illinois; died 22 July 1905, Peoria County, Illinois; married Mary A. Kennedy, 12 October 1865, Peoria County, Illinois. Mary was born 3 October 1846, Ohio; died 14 January 1937, Glasford, Peoria, Illinois. They were the parents of three sons.
  3. Samuel Coleman Bandy, born 26 November 1844, Peoria County, Illinois; died 26 April 1916, Peoria County, Illinois; married Salina Waters, 19 September 1864, Peoria County, Illinois. Salina was born c1842; died 1919. They were the parents of twelve children, with eight living in 1900.
  4. Nancy Elizabeth Bandy, born 1845, Peoria County, Illinois; died 13 January 1916, Los Angeles County, California; married Joseph T. Phillips, c1876. Joseph was born July 1847, Ohio; died 4 June 1912, Clinton, Clinton, Iowa. They were the parents of one son, who didn’t marry and had no children, and one daughter.
  5. Mahala Bandy, born 11 May 1848, Peoria County, Illinois; died 20 February 1860, Glasford, Peoria, Illinois. No children.
  6. Minerva Bandy, born 9 August 1852, Peoria County, Illinois; died 17 September 1929, Peoria County, Illinois; married Jonathan Petty, 6 May 1875, Peoria County, Illinois. Jonathan was born c1853, Illinois. Minerva is enumerated as divorced in 1910 and both in 1900 and 1910 reported having given birth to one child, still living. However, in 1880, she was enumerated at home with her parents, widowed, and no child who could be hers in the household. If she had a child, its identity has remained unknown.

Next in the family sketches will be that of Michael Hobble who married Martha Bandy.
