Nancy Bandy was the fifth child and third daughter of Andrew Bandy and his wife, Rebecca Wooldridge. She was likely named in memory of Rebecca’s mother, Ann (also known as Nancy, as the names were interchangeable in the 1700s).
Nancy Bandy was born c1830, Symmes Township. Lawrence, Ohio; died 6 March 1893, Montgomery County, Ohio, where she likely lived with daughter Amanda (Yates) Rose’s family; married Isaac Yates, 7 May 1844, Lawrence County, Ohio.
Isaac was born c1825, Ohio; he died between 1880 and the 1890 Veterans Schedule Census. The census showed Nancy, widow of Isaac Yates, who served in Company A of the 33 Ohio Infantry from September 1864-June 1865. Nancy applied for a widow’s pension on 18 July 1890, so Isaac likely died not long before that date.
However, the family lived in Carroll, Reynolds, Missouri in 1880 and it is unknown whether Isaac died in Missouri or Ohio.
Isaac and Nancy (Bandy) Yates were the parents of nine children, although little is known about three of them.
- Amanda Yates, born c1845, Lawrence County, Ohio; died between 1881-1887; married John W. Rose, 20 September 1864, Lawrence County, Ohio. John was born 1842; died 24 May 1915, Montgomery County, Ohio. John married (2) Julia A. McGetti, c1887 [per the 1900 census]. They were the parents of six known children, including Maggie, born 1881, Missouri; died 8 October 1896, Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio.
- Samuel Coleman Yates, born January 1847, Lawrence County, Ohio; died 4 March 1916, Iron County, Missouri; married Nancy Caulley, 23 May 1869, Lawrence County, Ohio. Nancy was born 13 August 1852, Ohio; died 12 November 1929, St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri. They were the parents of ten children, six of whom were living in 1900.
- William Yates, born c1849, Lawrence County, Ohio; died after 1900. William is somewhat of a mystery because there is at least one other William Yates close in age in Ohio who researchers have conflated into one person. I believe our William Yates married (1) Margaret Oney, 1 January 1870, Gallia County, Ohio (2) married Mary A. Stauffer. Mary was born c1852, Pennsylvania; died after 1900. William Yates was the father of four sons. His story needs to be told separately, so he will be the subject of the next post. William and Margaret were the parents of four sons.
- Benjamin Yates, born c1851, Lawrence County, Ohio; died before 1870. There is a second Benjamin Yates, born c1850, son of Isaac and Rebecca Yates, living in Scioto County, Ohio. One Benjamin Yates married Jane Jones, 25 January 1868, Lawrence County, Ohio. This couple hasn’t been found in 1870 or 1880 and it is not known which Benjamin Yates this was. If Benjamin was born in 1851, it seems more likely that it was Rebecca’s son who married in 1868, aged 18 years. Probably died young with no children.
- Joseph Yates, born c1853, Lawrence County, Ohio; no further record after 1860. Probably died young with no children.
- Catherine Yates, born c1855, Lawrence County, Ohio; died before 1899, probably Greene County, Ohio; married Robert Jesse Morris, 8 August 1872, Randolph County, Indiana. Robert married (2) Katie McDaniel, 17 August 1899, Greene County, Ohio. He was born c1853, Ohio; died 20 January 1929, Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio. Robert and Catherine were the parents of three daughters.
- Martha Yates was born c1857, Lawrence County, Ohio; died 1926, Montgomery County, Ohio; married (1) Michael Riley, 5 November 1874, Lawrence County, Ohio. Michael was born c1853; died 28 February 1875, Montgomery County, Ohio. (2) Alfred Haines, 16 June 1876, Montgomery County, Ohio. Alfred was born 6 March 1850, Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio; died 12 April 1925, Montgomery County, Ohio. Alfred and Martha were the parents of five children, but only two living in 1900.
- Nancy Ann Yates, born c1862, Lawrence County, Ohio; died before 4 July 1883; married Jefferson Davis Adams, born 1 December 1861, Texas; died 14 November 1934, Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona. Jefferson married (2) Margaret Alice Crabtree, 4 July 1883, Gila County, Arizona. It appears that Nancy died soon after marriage and has no surviving children.
- Isaac Yates, born c1864, Lawrence County, Missouri; died after 1880 when he was living at home in Carroll, Reynolds, Missouri. Unknown whether he married and had children.
As can be seen from this family sketch, there are a couple of question marks as to whether some of these children have descendants. The family moved around and there are others of the same name and close to the same age to determine if the person is correct or not.
Tomorrow, I will diverge from Andrew and Rebecca (Wooldridge) Bandy’s children to spend some time piecing together and explaining the family of #3 above, William Yates.
