Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: My Earliest Maternal Ancestor

Wow! It’s really December and this year has flown by! This week’s Saturday Night Genealogy Fun challenge with Randy Seaver is, more or less, a Part 2 to last week’s Who Is Your Earliest Paternal Ancestor?

Today, we are looking at the maternal side of the tree:

Who is your earliest maternal ancestor?

This week’s challenge was way more work to determine because my mother’s American colonial roots go way back, deep into English and European history.

In this case, technology wasn’t a lot of help, although I did use my software program. However, instead of generating reports (the one I think might have been correct was 197 pages long!), I just scrolled through the list of everyone i my family tree – the index found in RootsMagic.

The answer is Charlemagne, born c747 and died 28 January 814 in Aachen, located in today’s Germany.

Rather than typing 20+ generations, I’ll skip to the more modern part of my maternal tree.

The line descends down to Francis Marbury and his wife, Bridget Dryden, parents of Anne Marbury Hutchinson (1591-1643), the Puritan religious reformer, who was tried, convicted and banished from Massachusetts.

I’m actually descended from Katherine Marbury, Anne’s sister, who was the youngest child in a large family, born c1610 and died on 2 May 1687 in Newport, Rhode Island.

Charlemagne’s line extends back through Katherine’s and Anne’s mother, Bridget Dryden and then through her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Cope.

Moving forward in time:

Katherine Marbury = Richard Scott
John Scott = Rebecca (MNU)
Sylvanus Scott = Joanna Jenckes
Rebecca Scott = John Wilkinson
Joanna Wilkinson = Israel Thornton
Sarah Thornton = Ira Hicks
Israel Hicks = Abigail Carlisle
Elida Ann Hicks = Charles Stewart
Annie Maude Stuart = Charles Edwin Adams
Vernon Tarbox Adams = Hazel Ethel Coleman
Doris Priscilla Adams = George Michael Sabo
Me!

I also have to confess I had absolutely nothing to do with documenting the early lines back in England. I have to thank Gary Boyd Roberts from the New England Historic Genealogical Society and his massive work, The Royal Descents of 900 Immigrants to the American Colonies, Quebec, or the United States, Second Edition, for his many years of research.

Happy December, Everyone and thank you, Randy, for this week’s Saturday Night Genealogy Fun!
